I know I'm going to get it for this one, but I dood it anyway-- Any of y'all still warm at Sammy for Kim Novak, Mai Britt and hugging Nixon? Maybe you want to skip IN BLACK AND WHITE--the Life of Sammy Davis Jr. by Wil Haygood. I was a Sammy smasher myself during the last part of his life but--hey the brother been dead now almost 15 years so maybe it is time to move on. For those who can (or those, who like a local Black man who held that, in his time, Sammy was the most powerful black man on the planet (?) you will enjoy and find fascinating this warts and all biography--which may go a little overboard trying to psychoanalyze Sammy but does a good job placing him in his times and all. Without a doubt though it cements his claim to being the best entertainer, pound for pound, of the 20th Century and it will reveal some surprises. |
