Check it out, check it out!!! I invited a very special guest to write a commentary on today's state of SLAM poetry. Regie Gibson of "Love Jones" fame and 1998 solo Slam Champion has written a great piece on his outlook on what slam is and what it is not becoming. I respect Regie as a poet. His genius is undeniable. That is why I am proud that Troy, the creator of the web site, has been so gracious in giving us a voice. http://authors.aalbc.com/regiegibson.htm |

Rondall: This was a good article written by a brother who has grown and progressed. However the world of so-called literary academic poetry has it's own versions of folks fakin the funk, cliches. poseurs, to wit: 1) The plad shirt wearing, wire glasses wearing, salt of the earth "sun shines out his arse" ecology and people loving philosopher 2) The Poor Man's Amiri Baraka 3) The 40 yr old and above "young poet" 4) The Sylvia Plath wannabe 5) The Long haired bearded loon 6) The Last of the Beatniks 7) The Last of the Hippies 8) The last of the Revolutionaries 9) The little colored white girl/boy 10) The spouter of stanziated prose 13) The person who became a poet to excuse being an obscure, inarticulate, recluse 14) The Dinosaur 15) The Man/Woman in Black with the eternal cigarette held European style and the black coffee 16) The Fount of All Truth and Knowledge 17) The Witchywomanearthmama 18) The Ezra Pound Apologist 19) The Any Time but Mine Guy (Modern Pindar, Sappho, Francois Villon, etc) Slam has its own audience and performers and levels. Some consider it mere entry level work. But there are poets who never go beyond limericks and doggerel. Each to his own. Better that than pimping or slangin rocks.

Chris, I am personally proud to be the "Poetry Pimp". I agree with you all the way. There are posers out there, and "we" have to step up to expose them for what they are. |
