(I could have posted this on any of the three pages on the board) Funny, provocative, profane, brilliant, crazy, erudite, talented, hip, outrageous, scary, political, prophetic, maddening, emotional, cold--all these words and more describe Amiri Baraka's appearance/performance/reading/lecture/jam at Cook Hall at St. Louis University last night. Part of his appearance was a reading of captions of collages done by artist Theodore A. Harris, part of it was a reading of poems (he did the controversial "Somebody Blew Up America"--which may be posted over in the Poetree wing which has gotten him into it with the ADL, the New Jersy Legislature, supporters of Israel) and part of it was answering questions--most of which seemed to be about the poem.

Few people can say that people heckle you , walk out on you , condemn you and give you a standing ovation at the same event, but that is part of the Baraka experience. I wish someone had filmed it (I was told that he will not allow it) because he will not be around forever--he is in his 70's and he has taken some blows--this was his first appearance since he daughter was gunned down this summer--and he talked about that, movingly--he is practically a founder of the Black Arts Movement, of Black Political Theater, a poet of great note, an essayist, a politician, so much--if you ever get the opportunity to see him go do it--you may leave mad or puzzled but you will not be bored by any means.

I've always considered Imiri Baraka a loose cannon. But anybody who calls Condoleeza Rice a skeezer, can't be all bad. LOL (I, myself, think of her as being a nanny who goes behind George Bush and cleans up his crap.)

Imiri is an inveterate rabble-rouser who often gives better than he gets.

You don't wanna know what I think Condi and George Jr. (and his wife) are gettin' into.
