Hello All,
I have just started this month's CWMYB selection Arrow Of God by Chinua Achebe. Achebe is one of my favorite authors. I know how to pick 'em don't I? Isn't Achebe divine? I hope you all like the book as well as I do. |

I agree Thumper, he is one of my favorites, too. In fact, his Things Fall Apart is in my top five of best books I have ever read. I'm sorry that I won't have time to read Arrow of God. I recently received a new teaching assignment and have to do some "Winter Wonderland" reading, i.e. The Scarlet Letter and Farenheit 451. Pray for me. LOL REK |

Man, am I glad to hear from you! I was wondering if you were keeping up with the board. You've probably peeked in every so often but didn't have time to stop and holler, I know how it is. Anyway, what you been up to? I called you out a few times but when you didn't respond I thought maybe you had bumped into Mr. Right and didn't have time to be clowning around with us. I've been feeling like an old dinosaur around here, most of the old school have graduated. As you can see, Reppskearn is still droppin' in. Since he's so quite, It's easy to forget that he's one of the old heads around here. He just quitely does his thing and for the most part stays out of the stream. You know what, for as long as he's been a member of Thump's Corner I don't believe I even know where he's from or anything else about ol'boy. We could write a book about you... "LOL". Anyway, times have been a little different for me but I'am hanging in there. So tell me, what have you been into (didn't I already ask you that *smile*)? Are you still chasing around them smelly little rugrats? I bet you haven't been doing much reading have you? You've missed some pretty good drama around here. Nothing like the "Anna" drama or some of the other "fights" we used to get into but folks were crying and pointin' fingers and thangs. You know how it goes. Yeah, when Thump had to lower the boom they were all upset but it petered out and everything is everything. Yeah it wasn't all that but those involved seem to think it was, I missed some of it myself.
I haven't been to the movies in some time, I can't quit get ready for that experience yet, if you know what I mean. so you'll have to fill me in on what's what's on the movie front. You know I always respected your book and movie taste. Man have I missed you!

Thanks for designating me one of the "old heads" of this discussion board. I accept this appelation with pride(SMILE). This my favorite spot on the WWW. It is so great to read and dialogue about great literature, especially with those who cherish and respect the written word as much as I. Carey ... I THOUGHT I found Mr. Right, "thought" being the keyword. Give me a holler and I'll catch you up and you can fill me in on what's been going on in your life.
As for reading, I've been doing a lot of occupational-type reading, new reading program and all. So, yes, I'm still chasing the rugrats. But I SWEAR this is my last year! I'm up for a few consultant positions.
I can't wait to get back into the reading-for-me mode. In a few I'm gonna run to B&N and purchase Arrow of God and Love. I've got nothing but time on my hands right now so I have to fill it with something. What better filler than books!
As for movies, I recently found Topper on DVD. I'm looking for the Thin Man movies (can a sista get some hep on that Thump???). I really enjoyed Pirates of the Carribean this summer. (Johnny Depp gets to sit on the "cute white boy shelf" at my house.) I'm partial to period pieces that bring a part of history into the present but give it their own sense of story. I haven't found a lot of time for movies but I do hope to get back to that enjoyment as well.

ta bonne fee: Well, I'll be damn. As I live and breathe...look who has the nerve to drop us a line or two!! *big smile* I'm so glad to hear from you!! Arrow of God is shaping up to be a right nice little read. I loved Love. And while you're at the bookstore, I strongly recommend The Known World. Now, you know you came to the right place when it comes to DVDs. *smile* Acutally, the first Thin Man move, The Thin Man was released this past summer. I got it as soon as it hit the shelves. You and Carey might want to check out the new 2 DVD set of Casablanca and The Treasure of the Sierre Madre. Right now, I'm patiently waiting for Laura and The Ox-Box Incident to hit DVD later this month.
Carey: I see my Ol' Grayhead is here. Have you got the special 2 CD edition of Marvin Gaye's I Want You?
Reppskearn: I hear you. Things Fall Apart has to be one of the best books written in the past century. Arrow of God is my third Achebe book. I'm not the least bit disappointed. Congrats on the new teaching assignment. I hope it works out. I am sorry to hear that you have to study up on The Scarlet Letter though. That books bores me to tears. I hadn't read Fahrenheit 451 in years, since high school as a matter of fact. I'm going to have to buy a copy and re-read it. Speaking of Winter Wonderland reading, I hadn't read any new Faulkner book this year. I'm going to have to do something about it over our Christmas break.

I didn't know there was a special 2 CD edition of Marvin's I Want You, I'll have to check that out.
I love Casablanca AND The Treasure of the Sierre Madre, I will be getting my hands on those.
Now this is off the top of my head but for some reason I thought there was someone in blackface in The Ox-Bou Incident. I could be wrong (probably are) but wasn't the person that was hung suppose to be a black man.....maybe he was???
I know you'll know. I didn't think the movie was all that and to this day I still don't understand why it's considered a classic.... what's up with that? Actually, to tell you the truth I don't remember much about the movie. All I remember is a bunch of guys are angry about something and grabs some drunk guy and hangs him. Now, hows that for an overview *lol". Really though, this picture slips away from me.
One of the advantages of aging is the lose of memory. That may sound crazy but See, I can watch great movies over and over because after awhile I don't remember them *smile*
Laura: Man, the lead character (can't think of his name, I can see his face) was too cool wasn't he.
Thanks for reminding me of those great movies.

Hello All,
Carey: There was no blackface actor in the Ox-Bow Incident. Two white men, and a young Anthony Quinn was suspected of stealing cattle and killing the sheriff. A posse was formed by an overzealous deputy and a ex confederate general. The posse hung three innoncent men who had bought their cattle, only to have the presumed dead sherrif ride up on them and ask "what's going on?".
I think the movie was a classic because 1.) it was beautifully shot; 2.) it told the truth about folks; 3.) Henry Fonda, only in The Grapes of Wrath and The Ox-Box incident does he have a speech that is a pip. A whole lot of folks could benefit from hearing it.
The lead actor in Laura was Dana Andrew. He was smooth, wasn't he?
No problem about reminding you about the old movies. It only hit me a couple of months ago, how big of a Humphrey Bogart fan I am. All of his good ones are out on DVD or about to come out.

Special CD of what's going On and Let's Get it On huh. Nope, didn't get them. I think I said this before but I like listening to Marvin On "wax, yep LP's. Although I do have much of his stuff on CD's, it puts me in a different mood when I break out my LP's. But of course the convenience and clarity of CD's makes them a must have. I'll have to check them out, thanks.
Boy, did I have The Ox Bow incident all screwed up *smile*. Well, looks like I have another movie to put on my to watch lists. |
