The book fair was established in Harlem in 1998, by Max Rodriguez, publisher of QBR the Black Book Review. It has been held annually in Harlem, New York City, for five years. Other venues have been established in cities across the country (i.e.) Baltimore, MD; Boston, MA; Chicago, IL; etc. We are establishing Long Island as an additional venue in an effort to promote community education, literary arts and literacy. The book fair will take place outdoors, from noon until 6:00 p.m., at the Freeport Recreation Center, 130 East Merrick Road, Freeport NY. In case of inclement weather, it will be held in the recreation center’s gymnasium. Vendor spaces are available at $75 per space. Story-tellers, clowns, face-painters and a balloon-twister will entertain the children. During the week preceding the book fair, authors will be going into local schools to read to the younger students and discuss literature and writing with older students. On Thursday, September 17th, at 6:00 p.m., a play for children, “Barefoot”, will be performed by Arts in Motion, at the Freeport Memorial Library, 144 West Merrick Road, Freeport. There will be three panel discussions in connection with the book fair. The first will be held on Friday, September 19th, at 1:00 p.m., at the African American Museum of Nassau County, 110 North Franklin Street, Hempstead NY. On Saturday, September 20th, at the recreation center, concurrent with the book fair there will be two panel discussions. The first discussion will begin at 2:00 p.m., the second at 3:30 p.m. (Schedule of discussions and panelists attached). Participants are available for media interviews. This event sounds extremely interesting. I love the regular Harlem Book Fair and feel it is wonderful exposure for authors. Unfortunately, this is the same weekend as the Baltimore Book Festival or I would drive up to check it out. If anyone goes, please let me know how it went. Peace, Zane |
