Hello, I am new to this message board. For the past few days I had been reading old post to get a "feel" of everybody. For the past few months I have been trying to build on my book collection. A few of the books I would like to get into are: The Warmest December (Bernice McFadden) Nigth Work (Nelson George) Shadow Lover (Hope C Clarke) Sittin' In the Front Pew (Parry Brown) If you have an insight to any of these books, please let me know. Thanks

Hi Red, Welcome aboard. There's a wonderful review of "Night Work" at my good friend Keith Boykin's web site--I believe "Night Work" is Keith's book of the month. I'm a big fan of Nelson George (love him)...but I don't think I'll be reading this one, although plenty of men who fantasize about being stripper-prostitutes probably WILL (it's about this black guy stripper who becomes a gigolo). "Warmest December" is simply classic good writing from Bernice McFadden, who luckily has just enough of a personality to raise her good writing skills above the crowd and set her apart from all the other stuff. Her books I'm always glad I paid for and I buy them on release. She's worth it. I mildly enjoyed "Sitt'n In the Front Pew" and never did finish it actually.

A really "exceptional"...and I do mean exceptional book that I just read, is "The Feast of Love" by Charles Baxter. This novel was nominated for the National Book Award last year. Baxter is a sexy white guy from the midwest (sexy, because he's such a brilliant writer)...but everyone here could relate to this story and would enjoy this book if they read it. It's really worth the 12 bucks.

I can't resist saying "hi" to someone named Red. That was my nickname when I was a sandy-haired little girl. Duh. |

Hi Michael and Cynique. Red (usually Redbone) is a nickname that I got from my job. Its because of my complexion. At first I hated it, but it grew on me. I was wondering had anyone read anything by Hope C Clarke. I just purchased Not With my Son and was thinking about reading her other work. |

Greetings from the bronx and harlem, ny, red! Don't worry about it, red. Ive been called yellow because of my complexion, though i would argue that i'm caramel! Sorry, i haven't read any of the books, but i'm sure you can find reviews from ya local library, searching the www using the titles or authors, etc....and you should check and see if any of the books were reviewed by the reviewers on this site! |

Hey Red...welcome! I'm Tee from Atlanta (raised in Arkansas though). The only book I've read from your list was Sittin' in the Front Pew and I enjoyed it. Despite the subject matter (attending a funeral for a loved one), I found Parry's writing witty, light, yet emotionally stirring. Made me recall things from funerals I've attended and the drama that surrounds a family during the death of a loved one. -Tee |

Hi Red, Welcome to the board. I'm usually a latecomer to these conversations, and wow, will you ever find some "red-hot" conversations here! I read "Sittin' in the Front Pew" and enjoyed it. I also met the author. Her personal story of success is inspiring in itself. |

I too read Sitting In The Front Pew and enjoyed it; so did my mom and my sister. The author has a way with words that made the book flow...and it was so funny! I'm new to the Boards also and just reading the posts to catch up.....I love it! It's nice to read comments from folks who are reading books that I am reading.... |
