Amy Alexander writes a column for Africana.com on an oft discussed subject at Thumper's Corner, citing Lanier Moore's new book TRIPLE TAKE and wondering about the trend in lurid, street level black male adventures http:www.africana.com/columns/alexander/bw20030623safari.asp |

I wonder why it's considered a trend when this type of work is actually decades old. Interesting. |

Can we blame the publishers for a proliferation of the black "safe safari" books, or is it the lack of support on the part of the black reading audience. In the book business, it's all about what sells. Try as we may, we cannot dictate people's reading tastes. |

Interesting article...it's obvious how the writer feels about it. I'll just say: I'M GLAD THERE'S SOMETHING FOR ALL OF US OUT THERE AS IT ALLOWS US ALL TO READ WHAT WE ENJOY. On a side note, I've heard nothing but good things about this book and hope to read it soon. -Tee

Hello All, It sounds as if Amy Alexander isn't getting out much these days or visiting the site. There are plenty of books that she claims is non-existent, that lies between the ghetto extreme and the six figure salary, jet setter crowd books. If a person half-way looks, he's bound to see them. If not, ask me, I'll tell you where they are. |

Ditto Thumper. I think my biggest issue with the article was that she hadn't even read the book? I hate when folks go on and on about things when they don't really have a knowledge base on the situation. -Tee |

Hello Tee, Exactly! You know I'm with you when you're right. I wrote Amy Alexander. She kindly wrote me back. But, she still didn't get the point that I was making in that it's not that the major publishing companies are pushing just these two types of books BUT THAT journalists keep INSISTING that they are when that's not entirely the case. I'm having flashbacks of the heavy publicity of Stephen Carter's The Emperor of Ocean Park! Sure, they could do more for AA authors on the plateau of Victor LaVelle and Traci Price Thompson, but the picture isn't as black and white as Alexander wants to paint it. |
