I'm finally getting my database up to date and my TBR pile has 173 books on it. That hurt! I have 24 books that I want to get read by the end of the month but that Ain't happening. I can't seem to stay off of here and my many reading lists to get enough reading done. "

ROFL...I know I know! And, I'm scared to even log my books in a database. We're still in corporate housing, so most of my books are in storage, but in the month I've been here, I've managed to almost fill up a bookshelf. Shame shame!

One day, my husband asked me..."Why don't you read all the books you have before you buy anymore?" I looked at him as if he had asked me to jump off a bridge in a bikini. That sure as hell ain't happening...and the thought of me reading thousands of books before buying anymore put me in a state of distress. ROFL. My collection is close to 4000 books now and I know I've only read a few hundred of those.

I'm a book addict, but at least I know it. <grin>

Count me in. There's noting like the rush you get walking into a bookstore or library. Makes me shiver just thinking about it.

Good evening.... My name is Sharon and I'm a book addict. The last time I can remember NOT reading a book was in 1972 or 1973 when I wasn't old enough yet to read. I've been hopelessly addicted to reading the written word. I sleep with a book in the bed. I don't go anyplace without one, I'd sooner pick up my book and keys than my purse.

I didn't come to this meeting to be cured of my addiction, but to learn better techniques for managing it. I'm of the opinion that not all addictions are bad. I'm hoping I can get that kind of support from this group of like minded people!

I'm glad you ladies have identified your "problem" because I was finding the prodigious amount of books you read, mind-boggling! LOL. But, as Sharon says, there are worst things to be addicted to. Me, as of late, I'm doing good to read 2 books a month! Worst yet, so very few of them hold my interest. what to do, what to do... I think I'm going to check out "Minions", because it sounds off-beat.

ROFL akaivyleaf...TOO DANG FUNNY, but I'm right there with ya. I'd rather be a book addict anyday...now to work on managing it. Hmmmm, I'll have to think on that one as I haven't quite figured it out.

Ho hum...

I do go through burn-outs at times though. :-(

Pssst. Come here. I’ve found the perfect way to manage my addiction and keep it on the downlow at the same time - the library. Very easy to hide from family members. Cheap [especially since we have 3 weeks so I don’t get late fees anymore] And, I can get my fix on in a variety of ways. Sh-h-h-h-h! Don’t let the meeting leader know.

ROFL...ahahha. That is FUNNY Crystal, but ummm, just for clarification, I go to the library at least twice a week and even check out books there, but I will admit I only do it because most of my books are in storage. I will check out audiobooks because those are hell on a sista's pocketbook and even non-AA author's just to check them out.

I picked up The Dirty Girl's Social Club the other day. Don't ask me when I'ma read it.

It's just something about having my OWN book that makes me an addict.

And Thump, I'm with you...or another way to say it. "if loving books is wrong, I'll NEVER be right." ROFL.

Now, I'm off to read FOR REAL this time...I've got two books to finish today. <grin>

Hello Everyone: My name is Glenda (better known as GG) and I used to think that I was a Book Addict (or at least a Bookaholic)until I starting listening to how much most of you read. I must still be in my infancy stages,I read about a book a week. I too am always reading something. I read myself to sleep at night and I grap something to read first thing in the morning to wake myself up before I even take a shower or a bath. My two sons are both grown men now and their one collective childhood trauma is that I would take them to little league football or baseball and when they did something spectacular, like a homerun or a touchdown and looked for me,there I was under a tree reading a book! (How Tragic!!) It got to the point that my oldest son would not allow me to bring a book in his house if he was entertaining, because I would find a corner somewhere and read. I can perfectly shut everthing out around me and read a book. I also could never think of reading all of my books before I brought a new one. I don't care how many books I have, I will always buy new ones. The library doesn't work for me because my reading mood changes too fast, by the time I get the book home I'm ready to read something else. Finding all of you on this website has been a blessing. Some of my friends read, but not nearly as much as I do. So thanks for being here and sharing this addiction.

Okay, okay, I have to confess too. I've been a card carrying member of book addicts since the soda pop romances that were still in my school library as a little girl. Remember those? All set in the 40s & 50s and it was about whether or not the girl got in with the "in-crowd". I was reading those in elementary school in the 70s, and they were outdated then. (smile)

Anyway, I moved a couple years ago to a smaller place across country and I set my apartment up as a book store. I sold three hardbacks for $5 and six paperbacks for $1 and still made $897.25. That gives you an idea of what was going on in my place. At the end of the sale I had eight boxes for the local library and I still took 12 boxes of books when I moved.

The funniest thing about being a Book Addict (say it aloud people, own you vices) is a dinner guest saw all my books and told me I was a "show-off". I had to refrain from dishing him up something nice in the kitchen. Never occured to him that I was a book lover, etc...I was just bragging and trying to make people feel bad. That episode still makes me laugh.

Tee-- I heard a lot about "Dirty Girls". I plan to check that out too. Just spent the day at a mystery bookstore in Westwood, and at the Beverly Hills library which has the nerve to have two used bookstores inside the library. One room is for newer books (great prices) and the second is for older titles. Might be worth checking out while you're at BEA...

At the mystery store I got the latest Dennis Lehane, Michael Connelly and an old James Lee Burke. At BV Hills library I got "To Kill a Mockingbird" and old copies of "Creative Nonfiction: A Journal of Literary Essays".

LOL...Hey GG and welcome to the club for like-minded individuals. We're book addicts and we don't care who knows it! <wink> I do have a question for ya. Do you read more than one book at a time? And ummm, I hear you about reading anywhere and blocking people out. I've done it at family gatherings until my husband called me unsociable...then I stopped. I even had a bad habit of reading while driving on long treks (before I got into audiobooks). Shhhhh...don't say anything, but it's actually quite easy to do when you're the lone car on the road. I stopped that too after hubby got wind of it. :::rolling eyes:::

Bayou, I've always hated math, but please explain this one for a sista...you sold four books and made $897?? And your incident is funny. LOL. I love visiting folks who have book collections...love to see what they may have that I don't. And yep, I take out my notepad and write them down!!

OOOh...and don't tell me about a used bookstore!! ROAD TRIP, ROAD TRIP! Last year, during the RAWSISTAZ Affair (in Atlanta), we all went to a used bookstore and dang-near lost our minds. I had already been a few weeks before and bought about 80 books...it was TOO MUCH FUN, so I only bought a handfull when the group went.

And for some reason...I can't believe I haven't been there since I've moved here. ::::making note to get directions from my friend::::

I'd be up for a used book store tour. Sign me up. What a cool way to see the country.

Tee--- I had about 1,000 books and people could buy 3 hardbacks for $5 or six paperbacks for a $1.

I love going to people's houses and seeing a huge book collection. I end up in the corner asking them about different titles.

I've started over with the book collection but my new place is much smaller than the old one so I'm trying to rely on the library until I move again.

I second the road trip. In say we rent one of those big buses, or a motor home, and map out a tour for next summer or something.

The first step is admitting you have a problem. Done that. So I made a pledge. I went through my literary treasure chest and took out a reasonable number of unread books (about 10). I have vowed to read at least one of my unread books per month. Simply owning them is not enough I want what's inside. I'm starting with Wideman's Two Cities. Anybody care to join me?

I'm not going to do anything crazy like pledge not to buy more books but I vow to read the ones I have.

ROFL K...I like your vow...I may have to do that. I have Wideman's book, but it's in storage. I think I'm going to start with some of the ones I have here and do the one per month as well.

I absolutely LOVE Margaret Johnson-Hodge's writing, so I want to read her book True Lies as soon as possible, as well as Travis Hunter's last book...Married But Still Looking. I hate when an author asks me if I read their book. They don't seem to understand that hardly ever do I read for pleasure anymore with all the review books coming in, but I'm going to get BOTH of these read before I see the authors next month!! That's my pledge.

Anyone read either yet? If anyone wants to read along and discuss...let me know!

akaivyleaf/Bayou...the road trip idea sounds fun. I'm going to try to visit one of the places here in Atlanta this weekend and once we hit CA for BEA, I'm hoping we'll have a bit of time to check out that other place.
