I would like your first or second hand opinion on books categorized as 'Motivation'. Are the books helpful? Are they more like one-time wonders, or do the same people buy them over and over? How did Les Brown's book(s) do? |

As far as I'm concerned, if you've read one motivational book, you've read them all. At the core of all these books is the "power of positive thinking" mind-set. This message is just packaged in different contexts. |

Norwood: I don't read such books. I have found them to be a bunch of rules and platitudes strung together that are fine with everyday life but almost useless when some real stuff hits the fan. The first contact I had with such a speaker was this white guy named Glynn something or other who had a harelip and had this program called Dare to Be Great, or something. The one who was doing great was him, selling all them books and tapes and stuff. I think the rise of motivational books is due to the decline of the importance of religion and family and social ties today (I sound almost like Jerry Falwell, I guess). I'm not saying that from the point of view of people lacking direction and standards, but lacking some comfort and reassurance that such institutions used to give. I am much more motivated by biographies of people who have overcome--Autobiography of Malcolm X, for instance. I did enjoy seeing Iyanla Van Zandt when she appeared on Oprah. She seems to have disappeared since her show tanked. She gave a fine motivational presentation. |

Do yourself a favor, Norwood, and buy yourself a major video game system, like a PlayStation 2 or an Xbox. You'll get a heck of a lot more motivation out of them than lining some rich how-to schmuck's pockets. |
