Hello All, I am so sad to report that Nina Simone is dead. I don't think that I have ever talked about Nina Simone before. When I started listening to jazz abotu 15 years ago, I ran into Nina Simone's music. I know much ado has been made over her 1957 recording of My Baby Just Cares For Me. But, I fell in love with her rendition of Little Girl Blue. It is with much sadness that I say good bye to Nina Simone. |

Nina's happy now. "And the birds are the birthmark of the world." As her Senegalese would say: "WOW!"

THumper, I remember as a little girl being both scandalized and impressed by her recording of "Mississippi G. D." She will be missed. |

I think Verve Records just release one of her CDs recently. As the 'High Preistest of Soul' Nina's voice is unmistakable. The loss is great, we must continue to remember her ...

"I love you, Porgy", was arguably Nina's "tour de force", but let's not forget what a really great jazz pianist she also was. There's a piano passage on her vocal rendition of "Mood Indigo" that amazes. She was one of a kind. |

I spent my teenage years in Des Moines, Iowa listening to Nina Simone. And when I got on my own I did my best to collect as many of her albums as I could. She certainly influenced my life and my writing: Mississippi Goddam, I Loves You Porgy, Sun Gonna Shine in My Back Door Some Day; Here Comes the Sun (Little Darlin'); and her voodoo/sorcerer songs. So many! She was/is an international treasure. And I applauded when she shot her gun at those skinhead teenagers who kept trespassing on her property. That was all she could stand -- can't stand no mo'! She will be deeply missed. |

It's a shame that such a principled, committed and gifted artist had to seek refuge abroad. |

I must plead ignorance...Until I saw the story on her on CBS News Sunday Morning, I'd never heard of her. Honestly, I hadn't...But it appears she's left the world quite a body of work. |
