Hi, all. I am the type of person who likes to savor every word of a good book. It has come to my attention, however, that not everyone feels this way; one of my good friends (who is also an avid reader)says she never reads every word. So, I'm curious, what type of reader are you? Do you read every word of every line? Do you skim just to get the gist of the story? Just curious! |

For the most part, if it's literature, I'll read every word, unless it is a BAB...then i'd drop it...if it's a academic book then i'll skimp, since the data is shaped by a particular argument, undergirding the structure of the book. Also, if i'm unfamilar with an academic book then i'll probably try and read every word. On the other hand, if i'm familar then i'm seaching for the argument and the author's contribution to the subject...in these cases, the data or sources, etc... are not "new" they are just presented differently.... |

Every word. Skimming means I'm not enjoying the book and at that point I just put it down. Bayou |

Word for word mostly. But . . . I will skim and skip if it gets bogged down. I was just reading something that had a little too much military strategy for me so I just skipped those parts. And, I have on several occasions decided I just couldn't continue to read something and I've skipped to the end just to see what happens and so I can get it off my mind. Crystal

I am in total agreement with Bayou Lights. If I'm not appreciating the writing, reading it word-for-word, then it's not my kind of book and I give up on it. |

I read word for word 90% of the time. When I was in college however, and it seemed as if I had an endless stream of literature to read, I would practice speed reading techniques and read the first 2 or 3 sentences of every paragraph and keep moving but I really didn't enjoy that. If I'm reading a book for review purposes I try to read every word. If I find myself getting bogged down, then my review becomes less favorable. If I'm reading for pure enjoyment and I get bogged down, I put the book down. |

Every word unless I don't like it--then I'll skim and then eventually stop |

I read every word of every line of every book that I read. If I'm hating the book after the first 100 pages or so, I'll usually just stop reading it. |

Hello All, I read every word. If I have to skim, I'll put the book down. There's no point in reading the book if you're not going to read the words. It's almost like eating and not chewing your food, swallowing it whole. What's the point? |

How can you enjoy the book if you just skim it? Does your friend read this way all the time for all books? |

I read, but skim the fat (ie. overly descriptive passages). Detail is good, but too much sometimes bore me, so I skim...to get to the meat of the story. If a book has majority fat, well then i put it down. |

Every single word, unless it is a really "BAB", then I might skip a line or two; but never a whole page. If I have to skim a book, I will just put it down. Even with a bad book that I am really not enjoying, I will read every word in the hope that I can find something good out of the entire book. |

I normally read every word unless it gets overly descriptive and it's a book I HAVE to read as a review book. I like descriptive and visual scenes, but when it takes two pages to tell me the sky is blue, that's a bit over-kill and annoying to me. As for BABs...ahahha...I try not to read those. LOL -Tee |
