Hello All, I just finished my review of Come By Here: My Mother's Life by Clarence Major. I know I started this thread on our previous discussion board a couple of months ago, but the book is so damn good, I don't mind repeating myself. If you haven't read Clarence Major before, you ought to. I'm still amaze that our excellent, cream of the crop authors get no play from the majority of the reading audience. I'm glad I found him, thanks to the After Hours anthology. Now, that's what a really good anthology is suppose to do, introduce talented authors that I haven't read before, so I can start reading them and expanding my library and knowledge. |

I have just started reading this book. So far, very good. I will get back to you when I've finished it. In the meantime, I'm surprised you have only recently discovered Clarence Major. He's got several novels out [ALL NIGHT VISITORS from which ANITA was excerpted was just recently reprinted in a complete edition.],many volumes of poetry, several anthologies, and two excellent books of essays & criticism [the most recent is NECESSARY DISTANCE]. CM is a major writer. Some of his work may fall under the category of post-modernism or surrealism but he is someone you should check out. |

Hello Thump I gave Ann this book as a Christmas Gift and she devoured it. She did the book in one sitting. That's right, she cracked it open and did not do another thing until she finished it. so needless to say she loved it. She thought Major did an excellent job writing from his mother view point, that's not an easy feat. So now she's curious to find some more of his works. Yep, you done did your job young man. I can't remember what that other book was that you were raving about. I got a borders gift certificate and I want to use it wisely. Dang, I guess I'll have to read down through the other posts and find it unless you remember which one it was. Carey

Hello Yukio, Come By Here is, so far, the only book that I've read by Clarence Major. It's the only book I can recommend. I plan to read more of his books in the future. |

Hello Thumper, Hmmmm. I wasn't sure if i wanted to start with Come By Here, because it sounds semi-autobiographical and i'm more interested in his fiction. I'll do a little more research and choose. He's so multi-talented, so it's a bit difficult to make a selection. Thank You Again! |

Hello Yukio, I understand. I have another suggestion, Major's All-Night Visitor. I only read an excerpt of this novel in the After Hours collection. I thought it was amazing. I haven't gotten my copy yet, but I plan on it. |

Yukio, I've read the earlier edited version of ALL-NIGHT VISITORS and really enjoyed it; but I would recommend MY AMPUTATIONS or SUCH WAS THE SEASON. For the slightly more experimental or avant-garde check out REFLEX AND BONE STRUCTURE, EMERGENCY EXIT or PAINTED TURTLE: WOMAN WITH GUITAR. For a sampling try his short story collection FUN & GAMES. |
