I just finished reading Kindred. This was my first time reading a book by Octavia Butler, and I must say that I was impressed. She told a good story that held my attention from beginning to end. It's a combination of slave memoir and historical fiction told through some mild science fiction. Has anyone else read it? I'd like to hear your thoughts. |

Excellent read!!! She is one of my most favorite authors. You should try reading the rest of her works. My most favorite by her is Wild Seed. I don't often read books twice. It was featured in an anthology of black writers by Terry McMillan, Breaking Ice. There is an audio play that features Alfre Woodard, Lyn Whitfield and Ruby Dee on Scifi.com

Kindred was one of my favorite books the year that I read it. In Kindred, a Black woman goes back and forth through time from the late 20th century to the early 19th century. The story examines how a woman with 20th century sensibities adapts to slavery and plantation life.
Sometime after I read Kindred a book reviewer pointed out the fact that Bultler never offered an explanation of how and why the time travel, which is such an integral part of the story line, ocurred.
One would image the need for a plausible explaination for the time travel would be absolutely necessary. However Butler's story was so engrossing I never really thought much about an explaination once I got into the story
I would reccomend Kindred to anyone.

Kindred is one of the books I recommend to people whenever they ask me what good book to read. I find Octavia Butler to be a thrilling author and I have read everything that she has written. I too was fond of Wild Seed.
When it comes to Science Fiction, this is the type that I can handle and look forward to reading.
If I'm not mistaken, I understood or read someplace that Tananarive Due is a great fan of Ms. Butler and Ms. Due's works..."My Soul to Keep" and "The Living Blood" express the same feelings found in Octavia Butlers work. |

Hello All,
I'm proud to say that Kindred was my introduction to Octavia Butler. After I read Kindred, I passed that book around to everybody that I knew who read. They loved it as well. I've been in love with her ever since! I can't wait for a new novel from her. |
