Hey, Folks Richard Price is not an AA author but he has quite a few AA characters in his books (Clockers, Freedomland). Anyone familiar with this author? I just picked up his latest, "Samaritan" after reading a few excellent reviews. Would love to hear your thoughts. Also, picked up "Having It All" by Veronica Chambers. I loved her memoir, "Mama's Girl". Also got " Once Two Heroes" by Calvin Baker. His first novel "Naming The World" was a beautiful piece of writing. And, "Women" by Hilton Als. Bayou

Still struggling with Colson Whitehead's JHD. i only have 45 pages left. I've just picked up Mama's Day by Gloria Naylor, but i'm not sure if i'm gonna read that one. I think i'm gonna read Clarence Major's Reflex and Bone Structure. I think thats the title, not sure. I'm trying to get into some Leon Forrest, but his books are too long..lol! |

I'm reading Sexlife by a.a. Clifford. I don't normally do sci-fi but so far so good. |

I just finished Acting Out by Benilde Little. The first book of hers I read. Pretty much a you-go-girl with a bit more meat then they usually have. I think she did a fair job of getting us to see how/why girlfriend ended up where she did. I enjoyed the wife confronting girlfriend scene - always like those. :-)

K, I was getting ready to read Sexlife...I love sci-fi, but swapped it for HNIC by Gregory Morris (mystery), so I'll be starting that off probably by Monday. I just finished APF: The Indoctrination of Soror Ride Dick by Zane and I started on another manuscript by a new author that I LOVE!!! Sunday night I stayed up reading Chocolate Sangria and LOVED IT too! I've had a pretty good reading month and hope to round it out with 10-12 books read. I'm going to try to squeeze in Shattered Vessels this month and possibly Thunderland as well, if not, I'll roll them over to early February. -Tee |

Tee, Let me know what you think about Thunderland. It's on my to- do list and I haven't gotten a chance to take a look at it yet. |

Hello Crystal Ann just finished reading Acting Out and thought it was marginal. Ann said the author really didn't have a story. It wasn't very entertaining in her opinion. She enjoyed her other books The Itch and Good Hair but thinks the author missed her mark with this one. I suppose it could be looked at like a boxer who struggles to become a World Champion. They win the belt then fight a couple of cup cakes to fatten the ol'bank account. I can see a writer doing the same thing. They put out a few good books and then capitalize on their name and rush through a mediocre book. Hey, the bills don't stop. Ann said she'll give her another shot......but she has to bring it on the next time. |

Hey Carey...I haven't read Acting Out and probably won't anytime soon. Good Hair was the very first AA Book I remember putting down because I couldn't finish it...and I never went back to it. The second was Ugly Ways... -Tee |

Hello Tee That's interesting, I'll have to check back with Ann and see what she saw in Good Hair. Do you remember what is was about it that you didn't like. Was it the subject matter, storyline or writing style? |

hey Tee and Carey, I thought Good Hair was poorly written. although i thought the subject matter, black Manhattan elite, was interesting. |

Hey Carey and all. Ann is right, not much of a story in Acting Out. Things just seemed to progress in the "normal" way these things do with the usual choice at the end. Not even that much drama. Plus, I just didn't have any sympathy for ole girl. I understood but I just didn't care. Crystal

Hello All, I'm in the middle of Victor LaValle's The Ecstatic. Recently, I've been doing some major overtime in order to pay for my hotel bill for this year's BEA, which is in LA. And I do plan on enjoying myself. For all of you who won't be able to attend, I'll say this here, I love you BUT...I gotta go. Can't come? Sho hate it! *LOL* Seriously, if you can attend, I strongly recommend it. After I'm done with The Ecstatic, which is SOOO GOOD, I'm diving into Baby Mama's Drama and Chocolate Sangria! |

I plan to go. It would be nice to be able to put a face to some of the intellectual power on the board. We should all get together and do a Happy Hour, coffee, tea, juice whatever. |

K, I think I will definitely plan something a "Happy Hour, coffee, tea, juice whatever". Once I learn of what is being scheduled at BEA I'll plan something. If the budget allows, maybe something really nice.

Sounds like a party to me. Let's do it! I got copy of the latest K.L. Roby novel in the mail today. Her characters make me itch. I've pushed it to the bottom of my priorty list. Has anyone else had a chance to take a look at it? |

Ummm, looked at it, and put it on the shelf. I hope to check it out soon. Now...as for itching, is that good or bad? ROFL. I remember the characters in Here and Now working my nerves, but overall I enjoyed the book. -Tee |

Her characters irritate me to the core. I don't think her writing is bad (not great either). Typical I guess for what's being published now. We won't go there though, LOL, the post tend to get long and emotional when we talk about literary quality. |
