Hello All, I read Leaving Atlanta by Tayari Jones after I was through with my Zora Neale Hurston indulgence, and I LOVED IT! The book is excellent. The novel focuses on three students in the same fifth grade class at the time of the Atlanta Child Murders. There were a couple of spots that seemed out of sequence to me, but the book was dead on!! Tayari Jones is a new writer to watch out for. I thoroughly enjoyed that novel! |

Hello Thump Okay Thump I have this feel good feeling about this one. You know over the years when I get this special something about a book you've suggested it hasn't ever let me down. As you know I'm looking for a few gifts for Ann and my daughter and I'm looking hard at this one. Their reading taste is similar but they have disagreed on a few occasions. Ann didn't really care for Cane River and my daughter loved it. Do you remember Camika Spencer's first book? Well my daughter couldn't stand it and Ann thought it was a nice read, not the best but an enjoyable read. They both loved "Standing" and "echoes". As you know, Ann is a big fan of Tananaive Due. My daughter doesn't share those feelings. They both could care less about E Lynn and Omar but my daughter will read something with a little "sizzle" and Ann will pass on them, although she did read "Hot Johnny" at your suggestion. Anyway, what do you think, I know it's hard to pick books for others but you and Ann have very similar taste so help me out. By the way, my daughter lives in Atlanta too. I know you gave us a couple of leads during our conversation but I want this to be a surprise. She did mention Majors, is that the one you suggested to us? Oh, I think I'm going to forgive my brother and buy him a book too, any new suggestions. You haven't mentioned a western in quite some time, unless I missed it. Carey |

Hello Carey, I did mention Clarence Major. The book is Come By Here: My Mother's Life, an excellent book. I would try Walking Through Darkness by David Anthony Durham for your brother. It's not a western, but its wonderful. There is also a huge anthology titled Gumbo that has short stories and excerpts from pratically every AA living author on the planet. There are some good ones in the book, and it's huge! Also, there are new trade paperback editions of Fall of Rome by Martha Southgate and James McBride's first novel, The Miracle at St. Anna! Have you read The Miracle at St. Anna? What an excellent book!! Your brother might like that one too. Fifth Born by Zelda Lockhart is excellent as well. |

Hello Thump There was a rent party going on but unlike the rent parties of old, everyone that attended this party had to pay to get in. The currency was a story. Thanks Thump, I'm sure you recognized some of the wording of the above paragraph. I lifted them from the book "Gumbo". Yep, you were right all the big hitters are here. ...J. California, Percival Everett, Elizabeth Nunez,Edwidge Danticat, Pearl Cleage, Maxine Clair, McMillan, Mosley, Wideman, Due, E Lynn, Tayari Jones, Yolanda Joe, Jewell Parker Rhodes and many many more including, as the jacket read, some surprise guests who brought totally new jams with them. This book is great. This is a perfect fit for me. I can determine how much time I want to devote to reading and then pick out a story or two that fits the bill. A literary rent party.... Thanks for the suggestion. Carey |
