Here's what I ordered: For my son: Manchild in the Promised Land Selected Poems of Langston Hughes For my sister: a Bernice McFadden double whammy: Sugar This Bitter Earth For my Mom: Cane River - this book is about our family! My mother's maiden name is Fredieu. Not long after it first came out my cousin told me it was about us but I tend to ignore stuff she says. Well, I finally checked the library and that dang fool was right! For me: Dark Matter On the recommendation of Mr. Carey: Something's Wrong With Your Scale by Van Whitfield and Trumpet by Jackie Kay. Can't wait for stuff to start showing up at the door. So, what are y'all buying for folks? Crystal

Hello Crystal Van Whitfield's book is very funny, I think you will enjoy it. Now, what did I say about Trumpet? I enjoyed it, it's a love story but very non-traditional. I hate to tell folks what it's about because it would give too much of the punch away. Do you know what's at the core of the story? Anyway, Thump and I thought it was one of the best books of that year. I'm looking for a book or two for Ann, she's into mystery's and good drama like the two you're getting for your sister, she's read them both and loved them. She didn't care for Cane River though. She LOVED both of Guy Johnson's books. You know I'll be waiting to hear what you have to say about Trumpet, I wish you hadn't told me *lol*. Carey |

Hello Again My wife told me that if I was going to tell her business I had to tell the whole story *smile*. Sooooo.... she said: Although she didn't mind Cane River she thinks she was influenced by ahhh...ahhh...her words: "all them black women marrying them white men and let'en them dog'em" *smile*. But you know what, my daugther loved it. She said she didn't want it to end. Ann also said "The Wake Of The Wind" was similar to Cane River and she truely loved it and maybe that also played into her feelings towards Cane. Did you ever read Johnson's Echos Of A Distant Summer? Carey |

Crystal, Dark Matter is an excellent choice. It is a great collection of AA-oriented science fiction, encompassing many of the classic elements of the genre. As for me, I think I might order Six Figures, by Fred Leebron. It's about a man who hits the proverbial career wall and doesn't quite know what to do with himself or his family next. I have a vested interest in this book; you see, I took a fiction-writing course with Mr. Leebron at UNC-Charlotte six years ago, and I thought he was a pretty good teacher. |

Hey Carey & Claxton! Carey - you didn't really "say" anything about Trumpet but you had it on your list in response to Sisgal's post of which books you wish you had written or something like that. So I looked it up on Amazon and thought I'd give it a go. See, we're listening to you! Anne is right about Cane River. It's an ok story and unfortunately that's what happened to us. But it's about my peeps and I'm my mother asked me for it. The family tree is in there with a picture of my great aunt and the picture of the author's mother bears a very close resemblance to my Aunt Marilyn. Echos of a Distant Summer is on my list. Claxton - I can't wait to get into Dark Matters. It's been on my list for a while and I couldn't put it off any longer. I thought of someone I could give it to but I want to read it myself and I'm thinking it'll be a keeper so I guess I'll just lend it to him after I'm finished. Thanks for the heads up on Six Figures. I've added it to my ever lengthening list - something that happens just about every time I stop by here. I love this site! Crystal

Six Figures sounds great, it's set in Charlotte, my hometown--so I am headed out to get it right away. Who is Dark Matter written by? |

Hey, Sandra...Dark Matter is an anthology of African-American science fiction. It is published under the Warner Aspect imprint of Warner Books (an AOL Time Warner Company) and edited by Sheree Thomas. And yes, Six Figures is set in Charlotte. Fred Leebron and his family lived here for about two years before moving on to other venues. I ordered it from Amazon.com, and look forward to reading it. |
