From the ads here on AALBC, I see that asha bandele has a new book, Something Like Beautiful. I was moved by her memoir, The Prisoner's Wife, and I look forward to what looks to be its post-script about her life as a struggling single mother. |

Kitty, could you give us an overview of The Prisoner's Wife. At first glance, I see "prisoner" and wife. You said she was a struggling single mother, explain that. I like that title, Something like Beautiful. Bookcovers and titles are so important. Some grab us and some tell us to walk on by. I would stop and flip this one open. Then if the first few pages made me hungry for more, they might get some money out of my pocket. Thanks for posting. |

asha bandele fell in love with a prisoner, married him, and became pregnant during the course of his incarceration. That was the gist of The Prisoner's Wife--though actually, I don't think she was pregnant yet at the end of that book. Since then, she's had the child, her husband has been repeatedly denied parole, and he's been told that if even he does get released, he'll be deported to his native Guyana. So...this new book is about her life as a single mom. From the blurb, it looks like for a time she falls back into the depression and drinking that she was struggling with in the first book. |

That's an interesting story, Kitty. First, women that marry inprisoned men is not uncommon. I have a friend ...well, I met him on a journey and he hooked up with a women while he was in prison. He was the type that would put his hands on a women. He got out and nearly killed this women, he left her for dead. He went back to jail and again got out. He is presently awaiting trail on murder for killing his new lover. I called him a friend because he was. I knew of his past but didn't know what still lurked inside of him, very few did. I recently sent him 10 dollars to put on his books. I am not condoning his actions, I just don't understand. |

Hi Ferociouskitty. Im reading it now. I dont think Im going to like it. It is very hard for me to read about other folks issues with mothers and lovers particulary the way Ms bandele writes. Her best work for me was daughter. NEVER have I cried reading a book..for several chapters. WHEW...that book wore me OUT LiLi |

I heard Asha read from a prisoner's wife several years ago. I remember thinking she was crazy for getting involved with a man who was locked up (ignoring what he did to get locked up in the first place). However, during the reading and Q&A I was impressed by how compeling an arguement Asha made to not only justify her situation, but her love. I was left feeling a little ashamed for prejudging her. She is a brilliant woman. I still would still discourage my daughters from dealing with anyone who is imprisoned. However I would be sensitive how they might feel... Instead of preemptively dismissing them. |

Hey Troy. When I was younger..I was involved in a group that visited prisoners and wrote them. I stopped when a prisoner wanted me to meet him and I later learned he was shot and killed commiting a crime. LiLi |

Libralind2, my mother always said you have to be careful who you hang out with... Carey regarding your "friend", you'll never understand his actions unless you are as disturbed has he is. I would share my mom's advice with you. |
