OK, Chris, all--here's your chance to right a wrong! It's been a while since our last haiku thread. Too long. So have at it with your very own inaugural haiku. (Or, a limerick if you prefer.) |

. Haiku sucks too. That's why Poetry is dying. Haiku, like Hip Hop, is on its last legs. I'm into stream of consciousness: kiss lick Kiss lick kiss lick SMILE. . |

Well, Cynique---if the rest of them wrote something as clever and honest as you did, I could enjoy Haiku. Usually it just comes off as so pedestrian. And of course "contrived" as the whole art form literally calls for contrivance. American Poetry is boring because of Haiku dominance. . |

Haiku's cogency certainly offers a challenge. It's difficult to be brief,- to say in a few words what others feel the need to go on and on about. Haiku is very esoteric, tailor-made for Zen disciples who love to read between the lines. |

LOL@ Yvette and FK. Yes, FK, I'm usually a woman of few words. It's easy to understand why Kola doesn't like Haiku poetry, isn't it? This type of verse is not the forte of long-winded people. OK, Yvette. Here I go: There once was an Illinois senator Who got an office he wasn't a winner for But the Governor of his state needed some trouble to make So Roland Burris went from old vet to beginner. (Well, limericks are nonsense poetry! ) |

By Kola Boof: Fuc/k Haiku Mama say Been-to Mama Hey Mama Say! *I call this Haiku poem "Haiku Is Dead" and will use it in my next book, Cynique. _________ Been-to poetry is the best poetry, Cynique. In my book "Nile River Woman", a book that was acclaimed by the N.Y. Times, I wrote sparse 1-page been-to poems but it can done at epic lengths. http://www.amazon.com/Nile-River-Woman-First-Poems/dp/097120196X/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1232913941&sr=8-1 Ousmane Sembene and Franz Fanon were two of the first BEEN-TO writers/poets. Definition of Been-to writing: (a) You are from Africa (which is all black people) but you have been to somewhere else for such a long spell that your writing is now shaped by both places. Africans back home call us "been-to" writers. Aretha Franklin is called a "been-to" singer. (b) The writing can be read or sung. It is told in Black traditional Folk "cuts" with call and response or a percussion break. Storytelling is traditional, of a Fabulist mode. _______ **Japanese "Haiku" is introverted and contrived. African "been-to" is soulful, expressive and colorful. . |

Who cares whether you like Haiku or whether it's going out of style, Kola? Are you a trend setter? In the present all poetry is on the wane, as it slowly degenerates into an artsy-fartsy venue for self-indulgent people who think other people care what their verbal diarrhea smells like. BTW, what you tried to pass off as haiku came no where near to conforming to what constitutes legitimate haiku verse. |

Cynique, you reminded me of something. Do you remember a few years ago when there was a haiku thread here, and someone (Chris Hayden maybe?) pointed out that haiku was more than just 5-7-5 verse? That, by definition, the poem also needed to have nature as its subject? I think that was here on these boards, but I'm not 100% sure. At any rate, I remember thinking then that even if what we were playing around with wasn't "real" haiku, I still enjoyed the challenged of taking the 5-7-5 constraint and presenting a coherent thought within it. When my boyfriend and I were first dating, we spent a day corresponding via email using only the 5-7-5 constraint. Maybe some wouldn't call that haiku, but we called it lurve. *cue nauseating Celine Dion music* LOLOLOL! |

Yes, FK--seems that in traditional haiku there must be one "season" word. In one of the ones I wrote about the inauguration I tried to do that, but it is not always easy. Maybe some wouldn't call that haiku, but we called it lurve Maybe some would not Call our first spring's mail haiku But we called it "lurve" Awwwwww! LOL |

Okay to toast my chocolate sister's haiku skillz, here's a Chocolate Stout from Indiana's own Upland Brewing Co. It was either that or some O. E. from my man's native Southeast D.C. ;-) |

Thanks for proving my point, Yvette.
Contrived. It's like playing Rubic's Cube, right? No soul; no scats or runs --no feeling needed. A "season" is required and mathematical templates. Which is the reason the masses aren't exactly being MOVED no matter how impressed they are with being Waldo Pepper. Give me Long-winded Maya Angelou, Sylvia Plath and Mark Twain any day of the week. One thing I will give you Cynique --the SHORT ATTENTION SPAN is definitely in vogue right now. So I'm not suprised about you using Haiku as "filler" inbetween your Crossword Puzzles in the TV-GUIDE. Translation: "Don't start none, won't be none." Of course, since we respect Japanese culture so much more, and since we're waiting on the White Poetry Balcony to dictate to us what is the next new big thing--we will continue to try and breathe HOT AIR into this dying animal. And yes, Cynique--I most definitely am a trendsetter. The count is now 3 major rap acts that have mentioned "Kola Boof" in their lyrics. Now I'll let you and Miss Ferocious get back to bumping Crab Armour in that barrel you love so much. . |

Now that you mention it, I do remember the "season" thing, FK and Yvette. I'd forgotten all about that! Chrishayden also knows his stuff when it comes to poetry. And. of course the beauty of Haiku is lost on you, Kola, because discipline of thought is a foreign concept to your spongy brain. Because you bomb when it comes to haiku, you hope to convince me that your being the poetic personification of Chevy instead of a Toyota makes you a trend setter. Puleeze. BTW, who are the major Rappers mentioning your name in their spits, Kola? Mo, Curley and Shemp??? \clipart. I can hear em now. All dat bytch kola got is a real smart tongue cuz it can teach your d i c k a new way to cum. She thinks Africa lies between her thighs And this is supposed to make her wise. But all she talks is a lot of BS And all she wants to hear is yes yes. No, No, No, No, No, No, No. That big mouth Kola got to Go go go. |

That was pretty good, Cynique, I like that. I would have to ask my oldest son for the specific details, because I don't follow rap anymore. I know for sure that one is "Bones Thugz 'N Harmony" (2006) and I believe another is "The Goody Mod" or something, which is brand new. Actually...I'm barely mentioned in the two American rap songs. They just use my name in passing. I believe one goes something like: "fire up on the roof... burn 'yo ass blacker than Kola Boof." I heard Mariah Carey singing on one of the versions of it. But the Sudanese rapper Emanuel Jaal did an entire song called "Kola Boof" and it's about a female soldier wished into being by the Dinka tribe. He raps that she will go down as the "wife" of the Cattle God. He has another song that references Alek Wek and Kola Boof. That CD went Gold here in the States. It was YOU who asked. . |
