This NEEDED to be addressed. You'd be amazed how many people think that having a black president is the end all be all to all problems that black men, women, and children, face because of the color of our skin. While I will admit that ONE huge barrier was torn down, a kajillion other barriers, tangible and intangible STILL have yet to be overcome.
Trust, when all is said and done, to some he will just be considered another "magic negro" who was somehow "better than" and not like the rest of "them". |

West should give black people credit for not being naive about race after all of these centuries. I have yet to encounter one black person young or old who thinks Obama's election means that racial prejudice has disappeared.
It's also obvious from Obama's cabinet picks that only the upper echelon of blacks will be entrusted with any responsibility in running the country and even these high achievers are in the minority.
Obama is only as powerful as Congress will allow him to be, and as of yesterday, there is only one black senator. |

I might add that Kam Williams is the one who is naive. Anybody who thinks politics is about idealism instead of pragmatism is living in a dream world. I always got the impression that Kam is one of those fair-skinned brothers who has a need to bend over backwards to prove how black and radical he is.
Needless to say that Cornel West, in all of his wisdom, does bring broad perspective to the issues. |

Kam yanked my chain??? What are you talking about? I didn't have Obama on a pedestal when it came to his presidential aspirations or do I now have unrealistic hopes for his upcoming performance as president. I'm aware that he will be hard-pressed to make headway in curing the nation's ills.
People like you and Kam are the ones who lose control of your bladder at the thought of the new administration having a Clintonesque vibe. |

Hello
First, let me say I truly respect Cornel West. I think he is a mans man. He's fair, he's not affraid to speak the truth and he's just good people. Having said that, his opinion is still "only" his based on his own perspective. That's to say, it doesn't mean that what he said is right.
After reading the interview, I agreed with much of what he said. However I would also disagree on some issues. For instance, it was a popular opinion that Obama threw the Rev. Jeffrey Wright, under the bus. I do not agree with that sentiment. Also, on the Hillary Clinton issue, I think he was sort of hedging his bet. He didn't say he didn't think she was a good pick. He simply said that he thought Obama should "come of age".
Obama sits on a slippery slope. For years blacks have been crying for "the best man for the job". Now that he is using his judgement to pick the best individuals for the job, many are crying for black faces.
I am also so tired of people saying that most blacks think things are going to instantly change. What I want to know is who the hell is thinking that way.
Cornel West is the man. I even like his music taste.
I didn't see where Kam or Mr. West said or did anything wrong. I might have disagreed with a few things but I think it was a respectful interview. |

Actually it was the talking heads on the Fox Network who said that if Obama wins black people have no more excuses...
I remember hearing Bill Bennett say this on CNN on election night, just moments after the election was called for Obama, and all the commentators were asked for their reactions. He was so stunned, I thought he was going to cry. And not tears of joy.

No disrespect to either Kam Williams or Dr. West. But I couldn't finish reading the whole interview. One thing Black intellectuals are going to have to do in this so-called "age of Obama" is to figure out what their place is in it. Some of the old rhetoric is just not going to cut it--all sorts of folks, of every stripe, just aren't having it.
It is especially interesting to me how Black intellectuals who have found their place in elite majority White institutions tend to sometimes disparage how Obama has succeeded in a (for now) majority White nation. Do they really think that they (unlike, presumably, Obama) have become successful in spite of being radically Black? No, they have succeeded because they were radically Black--they have been "allowed" to be who they are in order to add a little flavor and "diversity of thought" to the university culture. The fact of their being there is not a revolutionary act at all. |

Very true, Yvette! What I found amusing was Kam Williams' attempt to shock the audience by declaring that he agreed with the Reverend Wright's condemnation of America, a rant that was straight out of the 1960s. It was like all of Wright's tired rhetoric was something new and daring.
And people do tend to regard Cornel West as a sacro sanct black icon, probably because he is so adept at mesmerizing his admirers with those intellectual spiels that leave listeners lost in a maze of words.
Like you say, West is just a propped-up example of the resident black radical that all Ivy League colleges have scrambled to add to their faculties in order to give the impresssion that they promote academic freedom. |

Yup, Cynique. I wonder if some of these folks, in their quiet personal moments, do not acknowledge the possibility that by taking a pay check from these institutions they have sold out? Perhaps they labor under the impression that they are "working the system from the inside" or something..."using the master's tools against him" or some such.
Now really, this is not a critique. We all do what we must do. Why shouldn't revolutionaries want food o their tables, a roof over their heads and clothes on their back--even good food, roofs and clothes? |

FK, the article you linked reminds me of a story that came out during the election. If I recall correctly, a young White woman was canvasing door-to-door for the Obama campaign and came to the home of an older White woman. She asked the woman if she had decided who she'd be voting for in the upcoming election. The woman shouted back into the house to her husband, asking him who "we" were voting for. The husband shouted back, "We're voting for the n*****." The woman reportedly turned back to the canvasser, with a smile on her face and just as pleasant as you please, replied, "We're voting for the n*****."
No. Racism is not dead. It just has--and always has had--a very pragmatic side. |

I would even argue that they are not "radical."
Marcus Garvey was radical.
Malcolm X was radical.
Nat Turner was radical.
Cornel West is a debater.
If you look at his personal life and
look at his writings (all of which I
have read)---he's done exactly what
Toni Morrison pointed out about
Ralph Ellison's book "Invisible Man."
That is what John Edgar Wideman,
Jesse Jackson, Cornel and all of
them do.
One of the reasons I admire and
become a close friend with Derrick Bell
("Faces At the Bottom of the Well,"
"And We Are Not Saved") is that he
had such a RADICAL and honest
view of the racial situation in
this country---almost identical
to my own (but with an "academic"
tone). His argument about the
"permanence of race" is the most
sensible, logical, clear-minded
and truthful revelation, even if
it's not what the world wants to hear.
I've always had a personal beef
with the fact that Cornel West
makes a 6 figure salary teaching
and has been to Europe and Ethiopia
(where he found a non-black Ethiopian
woman to marry in the midst of his
rantings)
....but has never set foot in WEST
AFRICA--the land of these ancestors
that he's always pulling out of the
air to talk about.
I recently castrated Ronoko Rashidi
about the same thing.
Why do so many of these SCHOLARS
of the "Wide Nose" always pay big
money to lounge around in pencil-nosed
Ethiopia and Egypt?
I love and cherish Barack Obama more than any
of the "radicals" you mentioned.
Obama is my first Male Leader since Malcolm.
I never would have took orders from those
other losers--including Farrakhan.

The above posts are a fine example why I love visting this board. It's rich with intelligent individuals with excellent writing skills. Individuals, that, are for the most part unaffraid to express their opinions.
I think I was feeling Yvettes post. I didn't want to bash Cornel West, and I will not do that now. Yet, I did not think he spoke for all of us. As others have mentioned, his viewpoint is shaped from a different perspective than the majority of us. Therefore I aquired a small resentment and wanted to say, "how dare you".
Again, I agreed with many of his opinions, yet, other caused me to pause.
I am in agreement with Kola in saying that Obama has reached a level of respect with me that puts him in the company of Malcolm X, Dr. King, Thurgood Marshall and yes Louis Farrakan. Now of course they all bring a different flavor but they all have tapped my pleasure zone.
Someone, I beleive Kola, hit on something I had never considered. I knew I liked Cornel West but I never questioned why. He's a great debator. Iam not saying that in a negative way. I am simply saying I like the way he forms his words and delivers them in a concise manner.
I said that I did't believe Rev. Wright was thrown underneath the bus. Okay, that phrase is generally used to say "fk him, I never liked him in the first place". In saying I do not agree that Obama threw Rev Wright away, like a dirty dish-rag, I simply believe we have to look at the reasons "he", Obama gave in his decision to move away from him. . He didn't say he didn't like the man and thus, threw him under the bus, in essense, trying to kill him. Therefore, regardless of what some "think" or how they use the phrase, it will always remain an opinion and NOT a fact.
Although I said I thought the interview was respectful, I felt a sense of someone talking down to me in a patronizing way. |

If anything, he BEGGED to have
his ass ran over.
GOD how Rev. Wright reminds
me of me!
For though I felt his sayings
were DEAD ON and True---
---I did not feel that "the
truth" alone should be allowed
to suppress and sabotage a
larger PRIORITY...that of
Barack Obama, our collective
HOPE-monger,
taking the White House.
I don't see Barack as a
Black man (to me, he is a
Half-Caste African);
I don't see him
as a "Black leader"
---but from a Sociological
standpoint, I feel that there
is absolutely nothing better
that could have happened
for Black America or AFRICA
than to have him rise up
and affirm us.
He does it very well and I
feel EXTRAORDINARY PRIDE in
both him and Michelle.
In my mind, he is a superior
new and improved
version of the BILL CLINTON
model that we liked
with a new and improved
Wife.
He was also better than any of
the Whites seeking the position.
AND...most important to a Cushitic
person
He has GOD's Hair; the Proof;
the Crown.
I just absolutely cherish him.
And yes, Cynique--that includes
his wonderful White mother.
(Not that I remotely dislike White people
for being "White" as so many
folks---not you Cynique--wrongly
assume just because I criticized
them and don't wish to be one of
them.
You can truly love White People and not want
yourself or your children to be one--
and they don't seem to understand that.
They're just as welcome at my table as

Check this, (within, 75 words or less  ) why do you feel that you have to tell us that Obama is not a black man. I know your reasoning but why do you think we need to hear that and what do you think is the mindset of most, if not all blacks born in America, when they here you say that. Can you see that that opinion can only serves to distance yourself from others that you may wish to hear what you have to say and respect your opinion? You could say that you could care less about what others think of you but that would be a sign of a serious case of denial. Why do you think it's important for us to hear that. I ain't even going to talk about the socks and shoes. You don't know nothing about that.
Okay, Carey. You just gave me a flashback. In the early '90s, my mom (God rest her) sent my then-husband some dress socks that were so thin, he put them on and immediately got a RUN in them.
I called them "pimp socks." ;-) |

I don't know what yawl are laughing about. That's what they were called. Thick & Thin pimp socks. What, I had them in every color . Please, I am lucky that yawl can't see the shoes; baby blue patent leather *lol* ...for real. |

I wish I could meet
ABM in person--not that

Remember the time his WIFE

That ended me meeting ABM
in Chicago.
Meeting and having LAMBD as
my bodyguard for BOTH Wash. D.C.
book signings was so much fun,
though.
