Hey Mocha,
Thanks for the link. But wow! You read 400 pages in 5 hours???! You're good! LOL
You pretty much echoed what a lot of the people thought who posted comments about not liking the book at all. Many of them also thought the same things about the accomplishments of Midnight at seven years old, as well.
I must say, all of this has made me really curious about the story, so I think I'm still going to get it. I love Sistah Souljah for one thing, but also because I want to support her as a writer. I know a lot of work had to go into writing 400 pages even if it's not on par with TCWE. I'm glad I didn't go out and buy the book right away, because, I definitely would have been among the disappointed I'm sure.
But since I know what it's NOT about maybe I can be more open to the story. And maybe I will be able to forgive her for not writing the sequel we all yearned for and expected. We'll see.
But tell me Mocha, did you find her portrayal of African American women offensive? That was the complaint that was repeated time and again on the BN website. |

Absolutely. It seemed like she was upset with AA Women for some reason... I did not find one AA female character that had "character". They were all fast, all wanted him, all schemers. I am not hating on the asian girl nor his Sudanese mother but they were the only ones who seemed to have any kind of moral standards or good intentions. In all fairness though, I dont think there were any "virtuous" African American women in TCWE either. I guess you were in Winters head so you understood (although may not have agreed with) her actions.
I guess its Sister Souljah's right to write whatever she wants, I do have to say that I did not HATE the story. It was just a little too long and a little too over the top.
Perhaps she will make it up in the next book. I too wanted to support her as a writer and I am glad that I did. I just expected more. But my ego is accomodating enough to understand that she does not sit down at her computer thinking "how can my writing please Mocha today"  |

Hi A Woman, yes I read and while I dont want to discourage you from purchasing a book, I would get it from the library. I agree with Mochascafe's comments when she says it was too long and over the top

If Sistah Souljah writes a bad book, should folks support her by buying it just because she is black??? It's not like she's a struggling new author trying to establish herself.
Me, I wouldn't pay 2 cents for this latest book since I have heard nothing but negative things about it. |

I'm not supporting her just becuz she's black. I'm supporting her becuz she is a fellow author and we all have the potential to lay an egg. That doesn't mean that that's all we will ever write.
I know sis souljah's potential and I'm not going to throw her away becuz she didn't write the story I wanted her to write how I wanted her to write it. |

Using that criteria you could go broke. Everybody who writes a book has potential. My point is is that black readers do have a right to be discriminating when it comes to investing their money in a book.
Sistah Souljah had to have made a bundle on TCWE. After 10 years, she finally follows this up with what is generally judged to be a dud. So much for potential.
And, yes, I know, black readers likewise have a right to support "flash-in-the-pan" authors. |

If a writer hits a home run like The Coldest Winter Ever, the next book is always a risk. Harper Lee did one great shot with To Kill a Mockingbird and that was it. Pulitzer Prize and required reading forever, ensured that it would be almost impossible to surpass.
I know that the publishing world is different now with multibook contracts, but could TCWE have become that standalone shot for Sistah Souljah, even though she did have a prior book. Will Winter cause a relook at TCWE and diminish it over time.
Perception of greatness is a fragile thing.

The same was true with "Gone with the Wind". After writing this phenomenonally successful saga whose popularity endures to this day, its author, Margaret Mitchell, never wrote another book. She stopped while she was ahead.
Maybe Sistah Souljah should've realized that readers gave her a pass on the poorly-written TCWE because its compelling story transcended its technical flaws, but that she pressed her luck with her second book. "Midnight" exposed her inadequacies as a writer because the story was crappy. |
