Half of a Yellow Sun by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie – a wonderful historical novel about the Biafran war. When folks used to try and get kids to eat by saying ‘children are starving in Biafra’ they weren’t kidding folks! I highly recommend this book from a historical point as well as just a good book period. The Jews aren’t the only ones that should “never forget”.
Then I picked up a book in the African Writers Series – The Translator by Sudanese born Leila Aboulela. A beautifully written love story. I think she did a great job in describing those little daydreams women have about their future when contemplating a hook-up. You know – like becoming great friends with the new man’s pre-teen daughter and both of you going on shopping trips and sharing secrets and her loving your little boy as her new baby brother. Yeah, right. But what I appreciated most was reading about the Arabic/Islamic viewpoint from a regular person’s perspective.
I enjoyed The Translator so much that I got Aboulela’s Minaret also and am reading it now. I also picked up Petals of Blood by Ngugi Wa Thiong’o. Between the African Writers Series and the Caribbean Writers Series I’ll keep my library card busy for a while. |

I recently finished "The Legs Are The Last To Go," Diahann Carole's latest memoir, which wasn't that engrossing, it simply being a portrait of a rather frivolous diva. zzzzzz
I also only got half-way through "Deconstructing Sammy" which I thought was going to be a definitve biography of Sammy Davis, Jr., but which instead turned out to be just a dry chronicle of the financial woes besetting Sammy's estate. zzzzzz |

Man, I can't say that I'm actively reading anything. Been preoccupied with events and other things...
I have not read anything on the trips I've recently taken (I mostly slept). Yeah, I know, it is a shame, but hey I'm human.
I've only been reading periodicals and portions of the Bible on my Kindle.
The last book I finished was T D Jakes' Before You Do. After that I got halfway through Gladwell's Blink (a book one could finish in a sitting).
The next Novel I read will most likely be by a African or Caribbean born writter -- there are so many book with positive recommendations by these authors.
I plan to highligh these in my nexty newsletter -- if I can ever get motivated (it was due today and probably won;t be completed until the first week in December). |

I recently read Slumberland by Paul Beatty and I am currently finishing Walter Mosley's third Socrates Fortlow book The Right Mistake. I've got Jeffery Renard Allen's new short story collection & George E. Lewis' A Power Stronger Than Itself: The AACM and American Experimental Music lined up next. |

I came across the fairly-recently released autobiography of Martha Reeves while browsing through the library shelves yesterday during my foray into the real world. (Martha Reeves as in Martha and The Vandellas, the girl singing group of "Dancing in the Street" fame, who were the rivals of the Supremes back during Motown's golden age.) I love books about Motown artists each of whom has their own spin as to what transpired between Barry Gordy and his stable of talent back in the day, and these bios are invariably replete with a lot of good juicy gossip.
Inspired by the snow flurries collecting on the wind shield of my car and taking my cue from Thumper, I also ventured into the winter wonderland reading realm. As annoying as her white bread genre is, Mary Higgins Clark does know how to spin a good mystery with her "young-woman-in-peril" formula so I checked out her latest to curl up with and roll my eyes about. Gotta keep up with best sellers, - speaking of which "In The Night of The Heat", the latest Tennyson Hardwick thriller spawned from the Tannarive Due\Blair Underwood\Stepen Barnes collaboration is also on my reading list. |
