Hello The other day a friend of mine asked me if I ever thought about blogging. I am not one to rush into thangs. It took me a while to get hooked on a cell phone. Now I can't live without one. When PC's and the Internet took off, I sat by for a second. I can not live with it either. I don't think I will ever be on facebook. Heck, I don't really know what that is all about. What is blogging? What's the pros and cons? How do you get started? Is there a blog block, like Thumper's Corner? I constantly hear references to this blogger or that blogger but where are these blog people? How does a blogger differ from someone that posts on a board? Does one have a home blog site? What-what-what, who-who-who, how-how-how, why-why-why? |

Carey, Blogs are bsaically specialized web sites where a single individual posts their own musings. The term is derived from web log; a web based log or journal. Technology advances and commercial forces continue to change the look and intent of a "Blogs". When the term Blog was coined (or when I first learned of it) I considered Thumper's Corner a multiperson Blog. If Thumper were the only one to post here then Thumper's Corner could be legitamately be called a "Blog". Get it? I have a Blog http://www.aalbc.com/blog but everything I post there I virtually always post here. Again these boards are effectively a group Blog -- Read by many contributed to by a few. |

Hey Carey - I don't blog but I have about 80 blogs saved to my Favorites that I check out regularly. There's only a few that I make sure to get to at least a couple of times a week but most I don't get to but a couple of times a month. Here's one for you to check http://auntjemimasrevenge.blogspot.com/ [lots of pictures so takes a while to open completely]. Posts on a message board are more interactive than blogs. On a blog a person is just posting their thoughts and while most have a comment section for responses other people can't post to the blog itself. Sort of an online journal open for the whole world to see. And here's one of my favorites that our boy Chris Hayden told us about: http://angryblackbitch.blogspot.com/ There are thousands [millions?] of blogs in the craft/hobby world where people talk about what they're doing, give instructions and show pictures. Really, just about anything you can think of there's blogs on it. |

Hey, thanks y'all. You've been answering a few more of my questions with your replies. I think it was Crystal that said others can't post on "your" blog? If that's true, how do you know if anyone is even visiting or reading your stuff. Africa's : "A blog is whatever you want it to be" Troy's: "Carey, Blogs are bsaically specialized web sites where a single individual posts their own musings. The term is derived from web log; a web based log or journal" I am feeling this but how does someone even know that you are there doing "your musing" and "whatevers". Do you go to specific topics and post your musing with a reference to your blog address. I guess I am asking if you register a name or own a blog address? Africa said she has several blogs that she uses for different reasons? I am still a little lost. I thought I was there when LiLi mention my sunday thang as a blog of sorts but the difference is this is Thumper's Corner. Okay, fill in the blanks. Do you register a name. Why would you have several blogs. Crystal said she had several saved in her favorites? How do you know if anyone is reading? |

Hello Thanks Afri(k)a . I smiled when I saw that. You were saying lets get it right. Crystal wrote: "Sort of an online journal open for the whole world to see" I missed this. All your comments are starting to put things into focus. I suppose I could have searched around on the net prior to asking my questions but what fun would that have been. Here in Thumper's Corner I knew y'all would give it to me right. And, I can get caughtup looking for something and not really know what I am looking for. I go to bible study (because I need to) and there's this women that sits behind me that always prods me to ask questions. Just this Tuesday I asked her why she didn't ask "it". She said, "you ask them better than I can". Well, I doubt that was the real answer. I think there's this universal fear of appearing ignorant or stupid. I am sometimes ignorant and sometimes stupid but I've lost the fear others judging me. Besides, when I need to know something you can call me fred or dead, I need to know. With the feedback you guys have given me, I now feel comfortable doing a little digging - THANKS. Hey, one more question. I was watching ESPN and this guy got fired because of something he wrote on a blog. Now, I was wondering how his boss knew it was him. I think he was an employee of a professional football team. He posted his resentment of a decision made by the team. I post under "Carey" but that is not the name I go by. Well, that is not the name that turns my head if someone yelled it out. I think Yevettep is Yevettep ...I think. I know Thump ain't Thump. I don't know about Afika Midnight Asha Abney (I plan on hitting her site). Crystal's family probably calls her Crystal ...well , they probably call her all kinds of names but I think her momma gave her that name. Er'body knows Troy. Li-Li looks like a LiLi but you know. So, give me the scoop on this. |

Btw, while you are thinking about that last question I have another that's not connected to that topic. I don't know if you've noticed but some people post at certain times. Kitty is a writer so she's up at all times of the night. But why is Li-Li posting in the daytime/early evening. I was wondering if she done lost her damn job. Yevttep has it like that so she can post while she's ...well, you know. Most appear to hit the board while they are at work and sometimes they have to get a little more out of their system and come back when they get home. I don't want to say anything about Crystal, I don't want to get cussed out . We know Chris Hayden gets fired up after he's had a few Olde English 800's. Cynique done told us she can do what she wants to do when she wants to do it. I don't know if it was the last few topics that got Li-Li all fired up but I am beginning to worry about her. I hope she doesn't come knocking on my door, she can't live here. Well, she ain't got no job no more and she's mean to me anyway. But then again, I know she's seen The Reader and my eyes are getting a little weak. You'd have to have seen "The Reader" to understand that *lol*. Hey, she said she liked it. |

Hey Y'all, since I am skipping around I got one more question that I need your help with. Listen, my lady is a great cook but there are some meals that ...well, I'd rather do myself. Now, she doesn't read this board so I am safe. But anyway, I have this little thang I have to do tonight and I am planning on cooking a bunch of chicken wings. Lately I haven't been getting my wings right. I've been overcooking them. Then when I try to get the meat tender, I don't cook them enough. I've tried starting with my grease being a little hotter. Then I've tried turning it down and cooking them longer. What has worked for you? How about the temperature of the meat before you pop it in the grease? Let's talk about seasoning as well. I am not going to put barbecue sauce on them, to messy for today. What about the flour or coating, what has worked for you. Do I dare use a bread crumb. Have anyone of you tried putting your chicken in a milk and egg type pre-batter? She's coming over at about 2 PM and I'd like to challenge ol'girl to a cookoff. See, that way I don't have to eat her tough, over fried chicken. What about the kind of grease/oil you use, how important is that? Now I ain't talking about good fat and bad fat, am talking about flavor. Does the type of skillet make a difference? HELP....time is running out! |

Do you cook in a cooker because the temp should be 375 and when they float to the top they are done (about 8 minutes depending of the size of the wing). I use seasoned salt and pepper and thin coating of flour and fry. I dont care for the "wet" batters. Durn now I want wings.. LiLi |

I had wings last night. Like LiLi I use seasoned salt and pepper [sometimes a little garlic powder but NOT TOO MUCH!] put them in a bag with flour and shake. I don't like wet batters either. I'm eating wings not dough. Last night I tried the way Sonny does on the food network - added a little cornstarch to the flour and it does make it a little more crispy. I like it. I use some type of veg oil, enough to come up about 2/3 the way up the chicken and not too hot. Most of the time I fry by ear. Once the oil popping slows down [about 5-6 minutes] I turn once let the popping slow down again [about 2-3 minutes] and by then the wings are a dark golden color and floating like LiLi said. Blogs - you need to just go visit a few and you'll get the hang of it. I believe the system you use provides you with a way to know how many hits you have and unless you have a comments section you won't know who and when someone visits. That guy that got fired probably has his name and maybe even a picture on his blog so anyone can know who he is. Kinda stupid if you're gonna talk bad about your boss. Also, a lot of them have a list of their favorite blogs so you can check them out too and so on and so on. It's easy to get caught up in blogosphere. |

Carey, I have greatly enjoyed blogging. It has served a number of purposes for me at various points over the years that I have been doing it. (Going on 5 years now: http://blog.lib.umn.edu/perry032/impossible/) The thing with blogs is--there are a few "big" blogs with readership in the thousands and comments for each post in the hundreds...then there are a lot of small blogs with little to no readership or commenters. If you're going to blog, you have to decide why you are doing it, who you want your audience to be, and whether or not you are willing to invest the time and energy to develop a readership/community--assuming that is part of our goal. One of the best ways to develop a readership is to become a regular commenter/community member of existing blogs. Find a topic you are interested in, bloggers who write on that topic who interest you and go from there. That might be somewhat of a stretch for you since you seem to not already be immersed in blogs. My 2-cents: Because you already are a fixture here, I think you should hit up Troy with a private email and talk him into setting up your "Sunday Musings" as an AALBC-hosted blog. You would then be the only one who would post articles to it, while everyone else could leave comments. You would then be responsible for monitoring it--that is, making sure it does not become infested with spam and keeping the conversation going. |

Oh. And yes, plenty of folks have gotten in trouble with employers, mates, etc through their blogging. You can blog anonymously, but there is always the chance that you can be "outted." I'm sure you already know this, but if you use your real name here on these T'sC boards your posts are fully searchable with Google. |

I always looked upon this board as a substitute for starting a blog. It is an open forum where I can post any musings which I care to share. I will now proceed to muse. I wonder. Do white folks relish fried chicken wings a much as black folks? I don't do much cookin anymore, but I do patronize an ol greasy spoon chicken shack that sells them. This same place has now started to sell side orders of collard greens to go with their finger lickin wangs. These greens are the specialty of a catering enterprise started up by the daughter of a friend of mine. Using an old family recipe she has now become a greens supplier for soul food joints and, boy, is her product delicious; not bitter, nice and tender, seasoned just right, and this includes a dash of hot chillies. ummm umph! |

Cynique: That sounds like a place in Pittsburgh called B's. And in Bowie, MD, there's at least one place like it, but surprisingly, it is not run by black folks. Maybe we're in the kitchen, though. I don't know... I've been away from put-your-foot-in-it Southern cooking for a while (I do okay, but I'm not either of my grandmothers in the kitchen), and the salt on B's chicken always gives me a headache. I can only have it a couple of times a year. |

Thanks everyone. Ol'girl called and said she's on her way. But like MOST black women, on the way could mean just about anything. Don't let her drive by a store. She has an addiction for spending money on just about anything. Don't let a purse or shoes be hanging in a window that she just HAS to have. And, she may even stop at a goodwill store and shop for an hour and spend 1 dollar. Oh yeah, she ain't to proud to shop for a bargain. In fact, just the other day a women was telling her how shape she looked. She said, "girl, I put this together with 15 dollars", I spent one dollar on the belt, the purse I had, the jewelry was bought at the ying yang shop and the hair piece cost me 10 dollars". The women then asked her about her boots. She said there are some things a women can't skimp on and it her shoes. She never said what she paid for them. Anyway, I going to the store to get my chicken. I forgot to ask what kind should I use. See, there's the whole wing and then there's parts of the wing. I think I am going to go with them little nubs ...you know what I am talking about. I usually buy the whole chicken and cut it up myself but I ain't trying to do all of that. Thanks for the blog advise too. |

Dang it I'm too late to comment on the chicken wings! LOL! I like whole wings myself cuz I love the fatty tips when they are fried just so and you can dip in hot sauce ohhhhhhh. Bliss! I won't say what I do to them beyond that cuz some people can get nasty thoughts in they head! LOL! But Carey I agree with all those who say the wings are perfectly done when they float to the top. If you are having trouble getting them tender, I deep fry mine, covering the deep fryer with a lid for the first three or four minutes then taking it off after that so the outside can get crispy brown. I'm late today, but you can try this next time if you want. |

Carey not everyone is in your time zone so the times of the posts may not correspond with your local time zone. You should have started another thread for the wing thing. but since you did not... I'm a self professed wing master. Wings are in my rotation of meals I prepare for the family. I bake 'em, buffalo 'em, fry 'em. Usually I fry them relatively hard so that they stand up t0 whatever sauce (which is different every time) I apply. I've used corn starch (I got that from some Chinese recipe but I prefer flour for the taste -- I never considered mixing the two, but I never had a problem with obtaining my desired crispiness I only eat wings and thighs the best skin to meat ratio. In fact, I just got through knocking out some wings a few minutes ago. I usually cut the tips off, unless I'm short on wings, and cut the remaining wing into two pieces. I go for the drum stick looking piece (there nothing better than sharing a plate of wings with someone who likes the other half of the wing). I wait until the wings are floating then I give 'em it a few more minutes longer. Ferociouskitty, what is the name of the wing spot in Bowie, and where specifically is it? I swing through that area occasionally. |

Boooo...to cutting the tips off the wings! I eat all three pieces. In order of preference: the non-drumstick piece, the tip, and then the drumstick piece. I crunch the tips even though it's mostly just bone and...fried goodness! In Bowie, the place is called Levi's. I was at a party once that used them for catering. My boyfriend says it's located on Lake Arbor Way. He uses an egg batter on his wings. I do not. I like them both ways. I haven't tried the cornstarch, but maybe I will next time. I use Lawry's, a little black pepper, and a little garlic powder to season my wings. |

Ferociouskitty, yeah I know the spot and have eatten there. My wings (yeah Carey I'm saying it) are superior. Admittedly Levi's is cafeteria style and the winds are prepared in advance and languish on a steam table for God know how long... Of course the best wings are consumed minutes after emerging from the oil. I hear you regarding the tips. But again, I only get down if I want more wings and there are none left -- which is rarely the case when I make them. I've abandoned egg batter a long time ago. Also don't like thos supersized wings either -- disrupts the skin to meat balance. |

"Not to mention--you gotta wonder what those birds were pumped up with to make them so big..." I was thinking the same thang. You know Abdul runs all the chicken joints around here and I was thinking something was funny about those wings. Well, they don't have the chicken shacks but they have chicken in every gas station. Troy mentioned something about the wings being better when they just come out of the oil and that's right. And let me tell you, folks be standing in line pointing at the ones they want. But I have to tell, I still like Kentucky Fried Chicken. Yep, it's just so tender and moist. Now here's the question ( I know Troy's answer ) who makes the best biscuits? Come on now, everybody can't make biscuits. I know Yevettep and A_womon don't know nothing about that. No Yevettep, I ain't talking about Pillbury pop and go. I should start another thread about that. Something like, Hold Up Your Biscuits. See, I can remember my mother rolling out the dough and using a glass to form the biscuits. But let me tell you, there's some places that got her beat! You might be surprised at who I think have good biscuits. |

KFC has gone down big time. Does not seem to taste nearly as good as itused to. I actually like Roy Rogers and Popeye's wings. Roy can be a little dry, and Popeyes a little greasy, but I likem both better than KFC and will opt for them over those all you can eat buffets. I like those Cheesy buscuits from Red Lobster. Popeyes makes a mean buscuit too but you gotta eat them fresh and you betta not be counting calories I've had many buscuits in restaurants better than mine. I've given on making them from scratch besides it is like changing your own oil -- you bother when you can get it done just as good, faster and cheaper by someone else. Yvettep, you know they are pumping the chickens up with something. I went to buy a live chicken the other day.. I had to run outta there sheesh! I'll stick with the, perfectly yellow, shrink wrapped, refrigerated chicken. |

Oh yeah, another thing Troy, I checked out your blog and the video of your gymnastic feat. I must say in all honesty, I could never do anything like that even when I was 15 years old! Damn! It takes a lot of body control and strength to do that. I could see from the video that you appear to be in good shape. How often do you work out? I was very inspired by your video. I've had some major health issues lately with some injuries (old and new) and it has prohibited me from training. I did go yesterday and I was very pleased with what I could do (takes time to get my strength level back). They have redone the gym at Balboa Medical Naval Hospital and the gym is absolutely fantastic! Probably the best gym in San Diego (home of body fitness and body building wannabes) -military or civilian! |

I'm not on any special diet (obviously from this post); instead of eating 8 to 10 whole wings (sans the tips & marrow), I'll have 5. Know what I mean? Glad I can be an inspiration. We can all use 'em every now and again. The only time I enjoyed Turkey though was when my aunt in Shreveport had one fried one up (then again what does not taste good fried?). Other that that, I don't even make turkey for thanksgiving anymore. |

Hello All, I know I'm coming in late, but the chicken wing thang is getting me going. I love chicken wings. There was a restaurant here in Indy that had the best wings ever. I tried for a few years to cook my wings like theirs. The wings were well seasoned and crispy. I had someone who work there tell me how the wings are cooked. The wings are seasoned (I too use Lawry's seasoned salt and pepper and a little garlic powder just like FK) Then the wings are deep fried--no flour, no batter, no coating whatsoever. Love it! Troy, you brought up chicken feet. Now, I keep chicken feet in my freezer at all times. My father's family in Georgia will suck on a chicken feet like most people will suck on a Popsicle. I use them to make chicken broth and will throw them in a pot of chicken and dumpling. There is a lot of flavor in chicken feet, believe it or not. |

I can lay down know, Thump came on home. I was wondering about him. See, y'all may not know this but Thump can burn ...well, he says he can. I have to admit that he seems to know what he's talking about. Hey, anybody that says they have chicken feet "in the freezer" gotsta be a cook. I'll eat a pigs butt but I ain't never licked on chicken feet *lol*. Know it's not because I prefer butt over feet, I've just never had them. Troy stole my answer to who's biscuits I like -- Red Lobster's. Popeye's ain't bad either. We have a few local spots that make delicious biscuits ...white folks. Yeah, just like Troy picking out his chicken, we can pick out our own pig. And, if you don't want the whole pig, you can leave with just his nuts. That's right, good ol' Mountain Oysters. Are you kinding me, slice them babies thin, batter them bad boys and pop them in the oil ...oou-la-la. Or, just roll the whole thang in flour and season it just right ...huh, hot sauce time. |

I'd never blog. I do not come up with brilliant things to say several times a day, contrary to what some people believe about how I see myself. |

I do not come up with brilliant things to say several times a day... Neither do bloggers. The good ones don't write to be "brilliant", and those who make it their mission to come up with brilliant things to say several times a day, fail miserably. |
