http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vWUDGFhmwqo

Last year I started working out again. As I lost weight and got a little stronger. I started doing some of my old gymnastics moves in the gym during my warm up (I was on Syracuse University's gymnastics team in 1984).

It took me months of trying to get this particular move back. I kind of take it for granted; but I noticed some time ago that it really impresses people, so I figured I'd make some videos of it.

Plus I think it might draw attention to my facebook page/blog/etc and get AALBC.com some more attention; cha-ching. I'm kidding. Not everything I do has a profit motive.

Dang Troy, you sure know how to make a man feel bad. I thought I was doing something when I got to 15 push-ups. I bet you can't dunk a basketball ...well, maybe I shouldn't bet that.

Yeah, that could be a bad bet. Lets see, a rich brotha that lives in a bad neighforhood in Harlem, in a nice house. A brotha that was a finance major at Syracuse AND was on the gymnastics team.
A brotha that felt sorry for Carey and lent him $50,000. Opps I got carried away. A brotha that everyone says is the nicest fkin guy one could meet. A Brotha that has every gizmo ever made. A brothat that's married to a black women and loves books. Yes, you appear to be one of a kind and you probably can dunk a basketball.

The point was that the brotha is unlike many others. Well, there may be others but the picture I painted is not common. Many Black American move away from ..."us" in mind and body. Troy is a success story at many levels. I gotta pull his coat on how to make boys but that's another topic *lol*.

So, although my post was in jest, the man is very special. And, as I said, it wouldn't surprise me if he could dunk a basketball, although he appears to be under 6 ft.

Now, lets get back to you. Was there a purpose for your question that you'd like to share with us? Did you really not understand it or were you being ...ah, NTSF-ish?

Well, I guess it depends on what you mean by being "NTF-ish". Perhaps you can explain that.....

Cynique, all I could muster on Facebook was an 8.0

Carey, if I stand up perfectly erect I'm 5' 7" in my bare feet. Interestingly, even when I could somersault over someone's head I could never dunk a basketball. The best I could to jump high enough to hang from the rim.

Thanks everyone one else.

I was wondering about that, Troy. Guys that were into gymastics were always a mystery to many. They are very strong but they were never bullies. Well, their size didn't allow for them to push many around and they seldom got into fights. They were very disciplined. I was a wrestler and we would always try to entice them into the wrestling room. They worked out in the same basement area of the gym/complex.

To be 5' 7" and be able to hang on the rim is a feat MANY will never be able to accomplish. I don't know if many truly know how hard it is to hold onto a basketball and jump to a level over 10 ft off the ground. Really, the present day basketball player makes it look easy, but it is truly a fantastic leap. Most people can not even touch the rim. Lets not even talk about flying through the air doing 360's or pumpa rump dunks.

Oh no, NTSF, I am not going there *lol*. I've been foolish but I am not a full time fool.

Now, if Chris asked that question I might be more susceptible to jumpimg in but then again I'll just let Mocha handle him *LOL*.

Funny you should mention wrestling. Syracuse University axed their Gymnastics and Wrestling teams, something about parity with the women's teams.

Those teams were quite good. One or two of the wrestlers were Olympians (if memory serves).

Hey some of y'all wrestlers were pretty small too!

My last fight I had was in Jr. high school. It was not because of my size either. Honestly, I believe I could beat physically most people I encountered.

I stopped fighting because many of the people who stepped to me had back (gang members), had nothing to lose, or might actually stab or shoot me.

To be 5' 7" and be able to hang on the rim is a feat MANY will never be able to accomplish.

This is true. Not many people 5'7" can hang from a rim. So bro Troy -you can leap. Maybe not high enough by todays standards, but you certainly can jump higher than the average 5'7" guy.

"I don't know if many truly know how hard it is to hold onto a basketball and jump to a level over 10 ft off the ground."

Good point! I thought I was the only one who noticed this. These guys nowadays are dunking like pure insanity! But if you have noticed, the average guy dunking a ball is well over 6 feet. You do have the leaping phenoms like Nate Robinson who shatter all the leaping records for the under six footers. But these guys are the rare exceptions -they are not average by any means.

"Really, the present day basketball player makes it look easy, but it is truly a fantastic leap."

True. I'm 5'11" and I played so much ball I had to stop. My knees were almost destroyed from playing basketball and football (they're totally trashed now but for different reasons). But I never was a dunker. I do recall one time in college, I was on a fast break dribbling down court for a layup. I leaped and literally dropped the ball through into rim. My head almost hit the back board. One guy said, "Damn man, why didn't you just dunk it!" I'll never forget that. Ha! Ha! Ha!

NTFS I said I used to hang from the rim. I'm not sure I can do it today.

Regarding knees; I've had surgery both. I ruptured a patella tendon playing basketball. Both knees are as good as new now; but I try not to abuse my body nowadays.

Dunking: Shoot, now you got women dunking -- in games!

You are correct Troy, many wrestler are small. I used to think that a guy that wrestled 145 was a big guy. My brother wrestled @ 127 and he smashed many big men. It's not always about size, you said that right. I think one of the biggest men I knocked out was at least 230lbs. I was about 170lbs at that time.

Go ahead Troy, you got them new knees, go out and grab that rim ...put it on YouTube ...cha ching :-).

That's interesting to hear that Syracuse cut those two programs. You know that wrestling is king around these parts and if anyone even whispered about cutting it, they would be grilled on a stick.

Okay Ntsf, since you opened the door, I have to admit that I've never dunk a ball in a game either. In fact, I've only been able to do it one time (in practice) ....many many MANY years ago.

"Dunking: Shoot, now you got women dunking -- in games!"

See there Thump, if you didn't spend so much time in the donut line and cheerleading practice, you could have been playing with the Harlem Globetrotters *LOL*. Am just saying, they still got a lot of old guys playing with them.

You know, I've know of many people who have had Patella tendon ruptures. They all recovered nicely over time.....except for me. I've had two ruptures. One for both knees. Once in the military and once as a correction officer. Never recovered. My knees are trashed to this very day. Every single day of the calender year I am reminded. You have know idea of the deep angst, bitterness and frustration I feel 24/7/365! But what can ya do? It's like being 5" tall and fantasizing and pretending for the rest of your life that you're 6'2".

What a terrible fate has befallen you, NTFS. I feel your pain. But at least this agony has not affected the ecstasy of your acute mental facilities.

The knee is the most fragile joint in the human body, probably because Homo Sapiens gave into the unnatural urge to walk upright. Guess all progress comes at a price.

Hello

Hey A_women ....wait, let me look around and see if PT.Pollard is around. I wouldn't want him to see us using this as a chat board :-). Anyway, I thought about you today. Well, since the conversations have gone from Troy doing handstands to Ntsf's bad knees, I think I can slip in a little general converation. Yeah, I was listening to Charlie Wilson's latest and I thought about you. You don't know nothing about that (Charlie Wilson) so I'll just tell you it was a good thang.

Ntfs_encryption, man I feel for you. I met a dude once when I was wearing my leg brace, you ruptered his Patella -- he never had surgery to correct it. He was working as a dishwasher in a diner I suspect he never had the insurance or money to have the operation to reattach the tendon to his knee cap.

His knee cap was over the lower part of his thigh adnd he had ace bandages holding the whole thing together. I felt really bad for him. I trust your situation is not like that.

Even though my knee feels 100% today I no longer try to play basketball on concrete slabs like I was doing when I blew my knee out...
