MIAMI — Florida defensive coordinator Charlie Strong believes race was a reason he hasn't been offered a head-coaching job during his 25 years in college football, a newspaper reported Tuesday. Strong, a 48-year-old black man, shook his head affirmatively when an Orlando Sentinel reporter asked him if his interracial marriage was a factor in getting passed over for jobs including one at a Southern school a few years ago. Strong, whose wife is white, said he heard that too many times for it to be rumor. "Everybody always said I didn't get that job because my wife is white," Strong said at media day Monday. "If you think about it, a coach is standing up there representing the university. If you're not strong enough to look through that (interracial marriage), then you have an issue." There are seven black coaches at the nation's 119 major football schools after four were hired in December. NBA Hall of Famer Charles Barkley said last month when he said "race was the No. 1 factor" why Auburn chose Iowa State coach Gene Chizik over Buffalo coach Turner Gill. Gill, a black man, also is married to a white woman, and ESPN later reported that two Southeastern Conference coaches said Gill got passed over for the job partly because of his interracial marriage. Strong had a message for those who hold his wife's skin color against him. "She makes no calls and she plays no defense," Strong said. |

Hello Strong's arguement is weak. First this: "Everybody always said I didn't get that job because my wife is white," Strong said at media day Monday. That statement is false and we could stop right there. Hell, I didn't say it and I know a thousand others that didn't say as well. If he did say that, he can forget about getting a job now because he's shown that he's stupid or is prone to say stupid shit. No one wants a stupid loose mouth coach, black or white. Look at that other statement. "ESPN later reported that two Southeastern Conference coaches said Gill got passed over for the job partly because of his interracial marriage". Now, who were these "two southeastern conference coaches" and why would they make a statement like that and what did they base their facts on? And THEN include the word "partly". This thang gets even more pathetic with the mentioning of Turner Gill and his white wife. Give me a freakin' break. So, because Turner Gill, who has a white wife, didn't get a job, that's proof that there's racism against brothas that have white women!? Damn, ya gotta come better than that, brothas. I ain't saying that it's not a problem but come with a valid arguement. Don't break in with some weak ass shit like that. |

Agreed Carey!! And he gets no sympathy from me. This is another Black man who thought that being married to a White/non-Black woman was going to increase his social standing. HA!HA!HA!!! The jokes on them. Hopefully, with Barack Obama being he will show some of these Black men that you don't need a White wife to be successful. |

Hold up, popeye the sailor :-). I didn't say he "thought" he could increase his social standing. I don't know what he thought. It could well be that he simply liked "that" white women. I have a hard time with people that think that brothas that marry white/non-black women, do so for reasons other than their lust for that women. I've seen brothas with fat nasty stankin looking white women and I doubt that they thought others would see them as this person to be praised or emulated. I am waiting for one person to bring a brotha up in here and say he married a light skinned women because he thought it would get him further up the social ladder. That just doesn't make sense to me. I ain't never had a desire for pink toe but hey, I like chittlins and some don't. Who someone gets their freak on with has little to do with the character of the man. Now a cynic could jump in with "well if they were married" or some other lame and out of focus arguement like that. But it's wrong for others to think they know why a person does anything. Really! When someone finds a way to figure out what another is thinking I want them to holler at me because I need a new pair of shoes and that sounds like money. Yeah, stand right up so I can tell you what you are thinking. Sounds like mess to me. That's some carnival type shit. |

I am assuming that this becomes an issue because a black coach having a white wife sends the wrong message to students at a southern school because interracial marriage certainly doesn't seem to be a factor in pro football. Chicago Bears coach Lovie Smith has a white wife, as does former bear lineman Mike Singletary who is now head coach of the SF 49ers. |

Having a white woman has nothing to do with enhancing or creating some kind of social advantage. Thinking a black man marries a white woman for prestige(?) is stupid and rooted in bigoted ignorance. As you noted, plenty of black men have white women and they are laboring in the bottom rung of the socioeconomic ladder. The reasons vary just as they vary for same race marriages. I have never heard nor seen a black man (or woman) receive perks or special treatment because their marriage partner is non-black. Such nonsense only exists in the twisted reality challenged minds of simple minded racists. End of subject…. ”I am waiting for one person to bring a brotha up in here and say he married a light skinned women because he thought it would get him further up the social ladder. ‘ Well, bro, you are going to be waiting for a lonnnnnngggg time. ”That just doesn't make sense to me.” And it shouldn’t. When has stupidly made sense? ”Who someone gets their freak on with has little to do with the character of the man.’ Preach brother…….! |

You're on a roll! When I first read this drivel, I wasn't going to post. But the more I think about it, the more suspect and unrealistic it sounds. If this were 1965, I'd say that probably could be true. But last time I checked -it's 2009! I need not say anymore (for obvious reasons). I hope the brother can regroup and come up with better reasoning as to why he has not been picked as a head coach other than having a white wife. His story doesn't pass the sniff test..... |

said he heard that too many times for it to be rumor I give him the benefit of the doubt that he did, in fact, hear this as an explanation from others. From what I understand, a big-time athletic coach's main function--aside from actually coaching--is to bring in money from wealthy boosters and alumni. So, assuming most of the well-off boosters and alumni of these Southern schools are Whites from a different time and mind-set, then I could see where a University president and board of regents (or whoever is ultimately in charge of this kind of hiring) could think twice about being confronted with a Black man with a White woman on his arm. And his wife may not call plays, but most coach's wives do help represent the university at functions and can be quite visible. |

Hello Don't make me say it. Don't make me say who did he hear that from. I wonder if it was the same crowd with a mindset just like his. Birds of a feather flock together and from what I gather he's prone to make statements that are very porous. There is no doubt that Universities make decisions based on all types of factors, race and money included. But that's not the root issue in this discussion. It's the way he voiced his concerns, that's the problem. We all know that there's racism behind the denial of some black coaches being picked for lead positions. However, those that voice their concerns in the manner like that of Mr. Strong, do themselves and others like him a disservice. |
