I received an email from a White Male reader today and thought it would interesting to see what people here think. He was EXTREMELY angry at me for writing in my autobiography that America is a White Supremacist and racist nation. He has just returned from living in Nigeria and wanted me to know the following: __________ I'm a white guy and having travelled in over 100 countries and 25 countries in Africa, I think it's Nigeria! (*most racist country on earth) Sure in French Africa, the police will want a bribe if you're english speaking and for sure if you're white. And boy will they be wicked!! But the local people there are nice and will want to be friends with you. In South Africa, they've got huge tensions for sure. But at least most people are trying to be a rainbow nation. And in provincial Western Europe and Eastern Europe, it's bad for black people. There'll be some idiots there who want trouble but most people would look away and in England most would stop it. Australia's bad definitely but a lot of people no longer believe in white Australia and even if they'd laugh, they wouldn't let anyone get hurt. But in Nigeria, it was unbelievable!!! I've been attacked several times on my travels but only in Nigeria did I experience being attacked whilst a street full of onlookers who all laughed. In Nigeria, it's funny for a white to be attacked. If he's bleeding, it's better. Why was I in their country anyway. After all, there's only 2 million Nigerians in the 'country' where I was born. Nigerians are far too backward to get along with other tribal Nigerians so a white is just an animal to them. Every Nigerian I met wanted something out of me. If I ask for my change in a bar, they shake their heads, close their eyes and sometimes scream in anger. What a stupid white! When they see me with my Nigerian girlfriend, they shout out loud and tell her in to eat all my money. Yeah! Ha ha! If I'm friends with a Nigerian and at the end I haven't given them anything, they get angry and make threats. Sometimes, they'll see you somewhere and just look at you and shake their heads in disgust. You're white, what are you doing in my country? Sometimes, they kidnap you if you're a foreigner. When I visited my girlfriend's family home, someone outside said: what the mess are you doing in my country? Most Nigerians utterly hate whites. And they think there's good reason to! They're white and were born on white land. Nigeria's the most racist place in the world in my opinion. It's pure happy, smiling racism. How can Nigerians talk about racism? . | ||

Well, from what he said, if all is true, I would say he experienced some nasty racism because of his color. Blacks have suffered the same humiliating and vile experiences because they were black. Not saying what happened to him was OK because it's not. If anyone is treated in a harsh, disrespectful or violent manner because of their ethnicity or race....well...I'd say they were experiencing racism. It's not rocket science ya know.... | ||

Ntfs, I agree with you completely. In all my work, I have been sure to include the racism of Blacks against Blacks and Blacks against "whites/others." But when I wrote the reader back...what I tried to impress upon him was the actual meaning of terms like "White Supremacy." For instance... When human beings watch t.v. for a 24 hour period and the only people washing their hair in "SHAMPOO COMMERCIALS" are White or "straight-haired" people, usually female---this is a MODE in which we, as a society, condition and train people to see one type of group as "superior" based on showing them as the NORM. Black People with "our hair" are never --and I mean never---shown washing their hair in a shampoo commercial. Yet people wonder why children cannot let go of terms like "Good hair." There are literally millions of social examples of White Supremacy, but another that people rarely notice is the "NUDE Panythose" label on stockings. It IS racist/supremacist to insist that only "pink skin" can be labeled "nude" and not by color--which infers that White skin, when bear, is the NORM for all humans... but "TAN OLAY", "COFFEE" and "MEXICAN STRAW" are exotic colors that require being named by color. I wear "Golden Bronze" pantyhose and when I put them on---my legs look nude. NOT GOLDEN BRONZE. What many Black Women Sociologists ie. Patricia Hill Collins have taken offense at--and I agree with them---is that White women's skin color on the stockings is not labeled "PALE VANILLA", "SUNTAN PINK," "SHOWER FRESH CREAM" or "PINK SHRIMP." I told the reader that when I wrote in my memoir that America is a "White Supremacist" nation---I was not speaking of violent, loud outbursts from people in the streets. I was speaking of the CONDITIONING, the constant subliminal messages that make it nearly impossible for Black People in this country to see themselves as "normal"; as fully "human" in a dark skin and cottony African hair. What is really sad NTFS... ...is that few "African-Americans" also notice the constant branding and labeling and presentations of everything. They have basically come from a history of being INCUBATED by White Supremacist belief systems for hundreds of years. Therefore, they are used to seeing images that degrade and injure their children without protesting it. In a "casting call" for TIDE DETERGENT or JIFF PEANUT BUTTER....the White soccer Mom must ALWAYS be played by a size-6 very attractive White woman, usually blond. She is of Child-bearing age. For those same commercials---a Black Mom is ALWAYS shown as "over-weight", "plain", "folksy" with a "honey-child loveable smirk." Naomi Campbell (or dark young beautiful women) are never cast the Black Mom doing laundry and making kids's lunch. NOW NOTICE...in real life...there are EQUAL amounts of Fat, Plain, Folksy WHITE GIRLS doing laundry and fixing lunch...but on t.v. "fat" White women (which is the majority of American women) are not allowed. They are always shown on t.v. as Slim, Attractive and "normal." This is why you will hear people claiming that "obesity" is a problem with Black Women--when in reality---we have just as many Skinny Brown Girls and White people have just as many Fat/Chubby White girls. But the CONDITIONING of the media images send the message--- "Procreate w/White Women; they are normal and attractive" "Don't Procreate w/Black women; they are Fat and undesirable." 90% of "brownskinned black women" on TV, Ntfs, are either "older 45" (beyond child bearing age), "Over-weight speaking Ghetto Jive or Country Folk" or they're "Plain Jane/Judge/Teacher" types. 90% of White women on TV are portrayed in "child-bearing age" and shown to be sexually desirable, model-looking, thin, even-minded. The majority of America's White W, however, are a Size 16--22 and basically benefit from the CONDITIONING that "white skin", "straight-hair" and White Semi-thick soccer Moms are normal. This message by the media is undeniable and it is also White Supremacist in that doesn't portray all women "equally" in their true images. My reader wrote back admitting that he had never thought this deeply on the "messages" of the society and that he did see how I---an African girl with brown skin and nappy hair---could find the constant messages racist and White Supremacist growing up. Though I love listening to Mariah Carey and have all her CD's---I resented Black Americans telling me that Mariah was "black" and that she (a stringy-haired woman with White Skin) could represent me as a Black person. As I told the reader--that kind of thinking alone (considered "normal" by most Americans) is White Supremacist/Racist and not all Black people on earth have been INCUBATED in slavery chattel and conditioned not to notice when they're being insulted. | ||

The young black generation are who the trendsetters are and the Ad agencies all incorporate hip hop aspects into their commercials. No commercials nowadays have anything to do with the "norm". They are all hype, delivering blatant and subliminal messages about "what will make life better" and all races are brainwashed by the blitz touting the supremacy of a certain product. Witness the accross tthe board appeal of what the diet industry promises. There are images that are directed exclusively to black people and when the products involves color, the spectrum runs the gamut. Cynique, Girl, you look great in that photo!!! I'm proud of you. You should have posted that shit earlier-- You KNOW Kola ain't mad at you!!!  I'm busy and not able to read the posts right now. But as you can see in this photo---  (Lecturing at Milken Jewish School w/Francis Bok) the health issues I overcame in Jan./08 and the recurring treatments from it have made it IMPOSSIBLE for me to be walking around with delusions of being 20. LOL! The Medications I had to endure fighting (and eventually BEATING) the Big "C" had swollen my face (which you may have also noticed in the photos that TROY pissed me off by posting----you might also remember back to the Schomburg Event when I only allowed photos of my body but not my face to be posted).  (Backstage, Young and the Restless) These pics are from SEPT. and a lot of the swelling has gone down after they operated on my Thyroid to keep fluid from crushing my throat--- ---from it I got "Osteo-Arthritis" in my left hand, but by losing 10 pounds, I can't actually FEEL arthritis--so it's like I don't have it. BTW...I I didn't have "glioblastoma multiforme"--which kills 90% of the time. I had two inner cranial sarcoma and they were caught VERY EARLY. (Like you--I'm also SALT ADDICT.) YOU ARE NOT...SO OLD. And though we spar constantly, I really do admire your PERPETUAL YOUTHFULNESS and I don't actually see you as some old lady. I give you props, sister. As well... The GREAT THING about posting these photos from when I was so ill, Cynique---- is that now that I'm recovering, losing weight and finally OFF the medications ---my beauty is still there and I have A LOT to work with in making my big comeback. In fact, it seems my life has been one giant series of comebacks. Expect me to look better than ever by the time I re-emerge "PUBLICLY" for the launch of my new projects at the end of 2009. Sometimes we have to take a break from the cat-fights and say something sweet... ...because all the negative energy isn't really the GOD in us. A huge misconception about me is that I enjoy being acidic and bitchy and that's completely not true. Fighting has always disturbed my spirit, but I've done it all my life because there was always someone trying to destroy me, disrespect me or take me down. I am a very gentle person and I am also tired with a capital "T". I have had a VERY hard life. As for the TOPIC---I'm not reversing anything I've said. I don't agree with you on this topic AT ALL. But I don't see you as some defeated and diminished old lady, and I wanted to stop and be serious about that for a moment, because AGEISM is really real and I don't honestly think that way about you or any elder survivor. I know how hip, young and SPRY you are, Miss Thing and in that regard, I think you (and all of us here) are GREAT. The original guy who wrote me the email has expressed his belief that I "Hate White Men." This is another huge problem that I find about America--- anytime a black person stands up for themselves, chooses SELF or speaks of their experiences and tells THEIR truth ---it is immediately seen as "Hating White People". Everyone acts as though we have some Obligation to ignore reality in the name of "getting along" or that me speaking on my pain as an African woman in a nation that hates me is a sign of combativeness. But I do not HATE White men or White people or anyone. If I had saw that White Man being beaten by Nigerians--I would have stopped it. Sure, I would tease him.... But I would also have cleaned him up, fed him and led him to a safer place. I am not a racist or a separatist. My problem is that I have not been CONDITIONED to the degree that Black Americans have--therefore, I appear to be very frightening and combative even to most American Blacks. Still, my own people (American Blacks) should be able to recognize me and understand what I am saying. My arguments are very intelligent and my perceptions about race, keeping blacks "in their place" and self-hatred in this country are 100% CORRECT--if hard to take, because of course--THE TRUTH indicts us black folks as well as anyone else. Having deep African roots...but being raised by some really tough Black Americans has given me a type of BRAVERY and COURAGE that most people don't have. And I realize that's why people fear what I have to say so much and try to silence it. I would like to see HUMANITY united as one great big family. But not if I am expected to be on the BOTTOM cheering the Light/White top. I am an African, and that means that I am "too good" to be on the bottom. I am the mother...of everything living on this earth. Animals, locusts, GOD, Humans and all --came from My Black Pussy, because there was no place else to come from. When you go to your Christian Church and you say your prayers---ask GOD what was the first religion on this earth--and you will learn that is was my Black Pussy; Africa. And this is the way that Black Americans need to learn to think as well. It is your African birthright to regain that way of thinking. Because you are also "too good" not to be loved and celebrated and accepted AS YOURSELF---AS BLACK (black as all black put together). And it is time that our White brethren, the Liberal ones claiming "Brotherhood" and "Sisterhood" so damn much, come to understand this. That we are "too good" to remain in our places. I would like to see nappy Black women in the Shampoo commericals, Cynique ---because we wash our hair, too, and more than that--We have GOD's Hair. well thats wierd, my dad went to nigeria in the 80s (sierra leon) and he said the nigerians treated the white men like Gods but absolutely HATED him for being black american. they attempted to kill him at least twice when he was there. so if this white guy is really telling the truth then nigeria has changed ALOT | ||
