The Obama girls have enrolled in one of Washington D.C.'s most exclusive private schools — Sidwell Friends School. What tips would they find helpful for navigating such a fraught social world? Farai Chideya talks with Sidwell alumna Damali Ayo* about her experiences as a black student at the Quaker school. Ayo started the Facebook group, "Sasha and Malia, We got Your Back! Black Alumns of Sidwell Friends School." http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=99249374 *(from "Rent-a-Negro" fame) |

I kinda think these girls should have gone to a quality public school. And I'm, not so sure that there won't be an undercurrent of subtle resentment against them by their rich white class mates. The atmosphere at this Quaker School is too sheltered and rarified. These black kids are going to grow up clueless as to what the real world is like. IMO Obama and Michelle are really proving to be paragons of eliteness. |

Cynique, as someone who sent my kids to private school at one time I gotta say that it is a tough decision. However, in the end my husband and I were not comfortable with using our kids in order to make a statement, prove a point, or show our support for public education. We just have a couple shots at this, and this is their lives--not a political or social statement. So I can understand the Obamas' (likely) thought process around this topic. However, I also think that it is very unlikely that many public schools would have the infrastructure, personnel, and experience with dealing with the security issues that come with educating children of high profile folks. Of course, SFS has all of the above--plus a quality education as well as the appealing historical track record of the Quakers in the US. I understand what you say about resentment. At a public school they may have faced resentment, too--but of the opposite kind. And certainly they both have experience with such atmospheres as they both attended private schools in IL from what I understand. I think the girls will be alright. Especially as their Nana will be moving into the White House with them to lend a hand. If they get too big for their britches, I'm sure Nana will take them to (in my own late nana's words) "the 'splainin' room"! LOLOL |

Yes, Yvette. You're right, of course... But - but, it's just that - I'm getting a little sick of all of the hype about the first day of school coverage for those whiny little varmints, and about what that gawky Michelle is going to wear to the inaugural ball, and all the focus on what kind of a damn mutt is going to be chosen to sniff the crotches of white house guests. I think Obama and his pimp stroll is the coolest, sexist, dude around. Sigh. And I especially like that he still cops a smoke now and then. In fact, I'm developing a crush on him, and I find his wholesome family boooooring! Sorry. I got carried away. It's that I'm snow bound. And stir crazy. Yes. That's it. |

LOL @ Cynique. Do you think having his mother-in-law in the White House looking after the girls (instead of a nanny) might keep things interesting? Folks keep talking about Michelle Obama as the first black First Lady in the White House, but I find her mother's presence there, being of an earlier generation, more interesting. |

Poor Obama. He can't win. Not only does he have to contend with Osama Bin Ladin living in an Afghanistan cave, now he has his Omama in Lawa residing in the white house. |

Omama in Lawa LOL, she might make things interesting! Imagine if Obama tried to have a Lewinsky-like, Oval Office dalliance? OiL would be the first to know. You figure, the girls are in school all day...she's got nothing but time on her hands. ;-) |
