Oh, this strange and awesome northern star Exalting from the corner of the sky Hiding in it’s gleam a raft of hope, of progress Of a sense of stable ground for wayward people Ever bound, Ever in the throes of eternal exodus Ever searching for a promised land. Oh this glittery, seductive northern star Lighting up the face of those who seek it Illuminating dreams of city workers And the rural, ever pliant transplant craftsman. Lighting up the promise of the shoemaker, The steel man, barber, line cook and launderette. Giving hope to the dice whiz and the trombone gutted deacon Giving drive to the new gospeller and the vision strewn guitar god Giving courage to the soldiers who gave their lives And sometimes in the process gave much more Oh this sad, elusive northern star Slipping from its seeker’s dreamlike grasp Torn away from its people lost in a wilderness Of northern tenement and cornered south sound slum Lost, in a blood dimmed wood of gangsta madness Junkie refuge, and gothic, morbid structures Where hope once did reside. Dark god of illusion, this northern star. Much offered, yet little given in it’s sky. Yet by hope or conceit of madness, We strain it follow it, blinded, heartbroken, Bewildered by an icy northwest landscape Trying to find freedom in this land
