I recently visited my uncle. Of course, we talked about the presidential election. I don't know whether one can FULLY appreciate what Barack Obama being elected President of the United States of America means until one has talked to +70 year old Black man who was born and reared in the Jim Crow Mississippi Delta (and, of course, the same can be said of much of the other areas south of the Mason-Dixon Line prior to the ascent of the Civil Rights Movement). I mostly just listened to him describe in very vivid and in part frightening detail how the world has changed so much during his lifetime. How so blessed he feels to have lived to see those changes, especially culminating in what transpired on November 4th. And how much he wishes his mother (my 'Bigma'), who had died just a couple of years ago, could have lived to see this day. His voice started to quiver, crack up, his eyes started to well up, then..."*sniff* Uh...Excuse me, nef". He went to the washroom. All I could say was, "It's Alright, Unc." And when he returned, we smiled, did that brief manly hug thing (we straight men do)...and then started discussing whether rookie sensation point guard Derrick Rose will lead the Chicago Bulls to the NBA Playoffs. |
