Layaway is back!
Several stores are reportedly re-instituting this practice. WOW--that sure brought back memories for this 40-something! I think every school wardrobe I ever had growing up was bought in installments. Oh the joy of making that last payment and having your plastic-draped clothes, with the piece of paper with your name on it attached, brought out from the back room...

My hand is raised.
If it wasn't layaway, it was waiting for that package from Spiegals Catalog. When the stuff arrived it never looked as good as in the book.
But layaway, lawd have mercy. Week after week my mother used to send me downtown to "pay on the bill". She would give me an extra nickel or dime so that I could stop at Woolworths or J.J. Newberry's.
Hey, I've often said that if everyone knows what you are doing, you ain't doing something right but I am going to drop a little secret. One of my favorite stores is Marshalls, yeah Marshalls. You can't beat their prices on towels, kitchen ware, nice luggage and bedding. Am not saying you are going to layout your house but that exact towel that would cost you between $24.00-$30.00 at another store could be scooped for 8 bucks. Don't tell you friends but some nice purses are there too. Not the high end 400 dollar models (that's what knockoffs are for) but some eye catchers for sure.
AND, they've been doing layaway for years! Yep, plastic bag with your name on it and everythang . Hey, stay out of my store, I don't want to see you there. You might pickup that Christmas gift I had my eyes on. I've even picked up a little gear for myself. Every store is different, it depends on the buyer in your area. I was in Atlanta and I didn't go to Kings memorial until after I went ot Marshalls. Now don't tell nobody unless you want to see yourself coming. For ten dollars down and a five dollar charge, you too can be waiting for that plastic bag with yo' name on it. |

At some time or another, everybody benefited from layaways, but it was really the salvation of the black underclass. Trying the get money from their baby daddies to pay down on their layaways was a full-time job for welfare mothers. If a dude came up with the money to get a chick's things out of layaway, he was the bomb. (Right after I retired, I took a part-time job as a sales clerk at Venture Stores}
It was only about 5 years ago, that WalMart discontinued their lawaway policy. I'm guessing that it will be among those stores re-instating it. |
