We are on the threshold of an monumental event in a crowded field of monumental events that have ushered in the 21st century. IMO, Obama's bid for the presidency has been more about symbolism than anything else. And so be it. Whoever wins, the country will muddle its way through a series of crises from which will emerge a different economic and social landscape. This is what "change" will be about. Whether this change will be better and whether the American mentality will undergo a positive make-over remains to be seen. Me, when I cast my vote tomorrow, I will not be voting for Obama so much as I will be voting against John McCain and Sarah Palin, - he who represents a variation on the failures of the past, and she who embodies a future that discourages diversity and exalts war and theocracy. Obama stands apart from McCain and Palin for the simple reason that he is not what they are. And that's a sign of progress. |

Cynique today NPR played an advertisment from the first Clinton camapaign. William Jefferson sounded amazingly like Barack does today. Campaings are always about symbolism, selling a dream... My dream was simple: A Black man in the white house. Unfortunately the crises we are in and likely to encounter in the near term will be a very great challenge for Obama. My hope is that people realize he is a man, not the next Messiah. I also hope the level of critism that will be leveled against him does not distract or detract from the very important task at hand leading this nation. I am confident we will not have to worry about him getting busted for being blown in the oval office or entering in a war for no good reason. |
