Hello All, Contrary to popular belief, it may not be that black folks don't vote, it's that our vote is the victim of the Republican movement to not count. Obama may not lose this election, it may be stolen from him. Here is a link that will explain this better titled Block The Vote, http://www.robertfkennedyjr.com/articles.html. I got this from Robert Kennedy, Jr.'s website. There seems to be a couple of things we can do to insure that our votes is counted. If handed a ballot make sure that it is not a "Provisional" ballot. And VOTE EARLY. Speaking of which, my mother, my aunt and I voted today. |

This is important stuff, Thumper. I saw Kennedy last night on Rachel Maddow's show and had intended today to read his article. This really should be required reading for every American voter. I, too, am voting early--the next couple of days while my kids are on fall break. (I have traditionally always taken them with me so that they can see and participate in the process.) It is amazing that in our democracy "complete participation" has never really been a goal. Suffrage--in name only--for Black men, all women, and young adults, of course, only came later. But even initially suffrage was not intended for all White men. Then there are new shenanigansfor example rewarding (largely White) small communities by counting their prison populations while disenfranchising the folks with records. Voting rights have had to always be enforced, even when they've appeared on the law books. It is imperative that we not take this for granted. An informed, empowered electorate is a dangerous thing for some folks. My hope is that regardless of outcome, many who became energized during this election will remain energized. As important as national elections are, the real nitty gritty of citizen work happens at the local levels. For example I remember a story of one of my mentors. A group of inner city parents was dismayed that the city had changed the bus stop route to a busier location during a route consolidation (aka budget cutting/money saving initiative). This new location was in a riskier part of the neighborhood, away from neighbors who used to look outside their windows in the morning and afternoon to make sure kids getting on and off the bus for school were OK. Well, they got together and fought the move, learning in the process about the workings of city government and all sorts of other civics lessons. When they got the bus route changed back they were different people, having a new sense of their civic power that they carried into other realms. I know a bus stop seems like an insignificant thing compared to, for example, the war in Iraq or the deficit. But that kind of smaller scale citizen action is crucial--not to mention more do-able--and IMO often leads to a sense of empowerment about larger issues. |

Scruples, integrity and veracity have disappeared when it comes to the electoral process in this country. The phrase: "good guys finish last" is now "as American as apple pie". America as a nation is actually a Republic, and it's becoming increasingly apparent that its concept of democracy has become corrupt. Is it any wonder that things have deteriorated to the point they have??? Stop the world, I wanna get off |

These people are very desperate. They all know the disastrous failed Bush administration and the GOP has lead this country down the wrong path. This is no longer debatable nor subject to partisan rebuke. But it still sickens me to hear them ratchet up the hate and bullshit. Accusing Colin Powell of endorsing Obama simply because he is black. I expected this from the Grand Poo Bah of distortions and bluster, Rush Limbaugh and the king of the ultra right, Pat Buchanan. But when I heard George Will jumped on the race baiting band wagon, I knew the election anxiety is running deep among conservatives. One conservative blog posted this: As I predicted a few days ago, Powell endorsed Obama. Some ask a very simple question: When was the last time Colin Powell ever endorsed a white liberal Democrat for high office? Answer? NEVER! What is the logical deduction? Powell's sudden endorsement of the most liberal member of the United States Senate was based on race, and race alone. Another possibility is that Powell was always an Obama-like liberal himself but has been pretending to be a Republican for his own career advancement, which would make him a complete phony.
