I've mentioned here before, I think, about my (not so) secret passion for photography. Bingham's images are just stunning--especially of the young (and incredibly fine) Ali. Photographer Howard Bingham has taken some of the most iconic photographs of the last 40 years, from the civil rights era to today. He is largely known for his photo documentation of heavyweight boxer Muhammad Ali, but his work spans from the Black Panthers, to Little Richard, to Nelson Mandela. Born in Mississippi in 1939, Bingham had little formal training as a photographer; he says he simply "learned on the job." He was on assignment for a local Los Angeles newspaper when he met a young Cassius Clay, who would later become Muhammad Ali. The boxing great became Bingham's lifelong friend, and Bingham documented Ali's life and struggles on film. Bingham describes himself as the "Forrest Gump of photojournalism" — frequently "popping up" at just the right time to document some of the greatest moments in American history. Excellent Link! Made my day! Before pay per view we had to see those fights on closed circuit screens, places like theaters and bars. My father and I used to go see them, great memories. I still have some of the ticket stubs of those nights. I can vividly remember sitting with my father and my uncle watching the first Ali vs Frazier. Btw, now my son and I watch all the big fights like I used to do with my father, back then the price was $12.50, now we pay $50.00 ...well, gas was under a dollar too. Thanks Yvette, great memories! Oh, that reminds me, don't ask Thump nothing about the fight game. He knows books but he knows nothing about boxing ...movies,sometimes ...books, most of the time ...boxers..ZIPPO! |
