Hey--former 1st chair alto sax in the house Another documentary that looks good. Circle City Classic is in the air here in Naptown, so this is right on time! Michael Patrei's 86 minute documentary follows the talented Ballou Senior High School Marching Band as they overcome a negative environment filled with guns, drugs and violence to uplift the community with music, dedication and personal sacrifice. This Washington, D.C. high school marching band—from an impoverished community just three miles away from the U.S. Capitol building—is on its way to the national band competition. They are a family with heart and soul that use hard work, discipline and compassion to overcome all obstacles. Political leaders and celebrities including Rev. Jesse Jackson, Gen. (ret) Colin Powell, Congressman John Lewis, Marion Barry, Denyce Graves, D.C. Mayor Adrian Fenty and Chuck Brown are featured in the film to show the importance of a small marching band in the lives of the band members and in the community. Aha! I knew there was something I liked about you, Yvette. I'm also a former first chair alto sax player (JHS, not HS). Did your music teacher also give you the whole spiel about the saxophone being a masculine instrument, big and bulky, and not recommended for girls - then went on to suggest the flute or violin for young ladies? Mine did. That's exactly why I chose the alto. This documentary looks very inspirational. |

Hey--former 1st chair alto sax in the house :-) You continue to surprise me, lol! Kudos to you and Urban_Scribe! I played clarinet in 7th and 8th grade. There was one girl who played sax, and of course, the boys went on and on with jokes about her being "manly" and such. |

LOL @ Urban_scribe, my saxsister LOL! You know, I guess I was very lucky. Both of my band teachers in high school were very supportive of my playing the sax. Earlier in junior high I did get steered to the flute. However, I could not for the life of me get any sound out of the dag thing during "tryouts" so "chose" the alto clarinet. For high school I changed school districts and decided I'd rather play the much cooler alto sax. FK: teachers aside, I was TERRIBLY hazed by the other band members, especially the boys. It did not help that I was (a) a transfer from a "White" school district, (b) a freshman, (c) an uber-geek, and (d) gosh darn good (if I do say so myself LOL). Eventually, though, we all became a tight-knit group so it's all good. |
