Anyone see it the other night? SImilar to our resident vampire, I enjoy portrayals of vampires as sympathetic, or at least multidimensional, characters. (I'll let Chris comment on how true or not to the mythology this TV series seems to be heading.) But what I was most interested in, of course, was how they would handle the parallels they are trying to draw with race relations, civil rights, etc. I had my doubts. A while back there was a show (likely on network TV) where a human police officer was teamed with an alien police officer. The aliens were just trying to become citizens, have equal rights, etc, but they were discriminated against by the humans. (Wish I could recall the name of that show--It was short lived if I remember.) Anyway, one of the things that I did not like about that show was that the aliens had to have super abilities compared to humans. So, the incidents of bias were a little too stark, black and white (if you'll excuse the saying). And the implication was that "Others" would have to be far far above average to get a shot at being equal to the "dominant" group. It would have been fine had the producers been trying to make a comment about the twice-as-good-to-go-half-as-far phenomenon with folks of color, but I do not think that was their intent. Well, w/Blood, I have only seen the one episode so we'll have to see how they do. A couple of other random thoughts: WHy is it TV people have such a had time with the variety of accents found in New Orleans? "Heroes" had the same difficulty last season when they brought in the NOLA characters. Maybe the actors will settle into their roles and do better with their accents, but right now that part is a little comical. Isn't Anna Paquin getting a little too old for that babe in the woods, deer in the headlights role she played in the X-Men films? And while I'm on the subject of her character, I do hope her Black BFF gets to do something on her own as opposed to because she just wants to keep her White buddy safe. Come on. It is 2008. Of course, this is cable so this show--unlike the previous one I mentioned--is full of sex, sex, sex. So far, it does not seem gratuitous. On one level, it fits in nicely with the race relations thing because of the sexually-charged underlying nature of much of both racial prejudice and racial fetishism. On another level, sex has always been part of the metaphor underlying the vampire myth. OK. That concludes my early morning TV review! LOL Season premier of Heroes coming soon, everybody. Hooray! |
