Actor Morgan Freeman is injured in car accident By HOLBROOK MOHR, Associated Press Writer 04 Aug 2008 Oscar-winning actor Morgan Freeman is in a hospital in Memphis, Tenn., on Monday after being seriously injured in a car accident near his home in Mississippi. Regional Medical Center spokeswoman Kathy Stringer said Freeman, 71, is in serious condition. The hospital is about 90 miles north of the accident scene in rural Tallahatchie County in the Mississippi Delta. Mississippi Highway Patrol spokesman Sgt. Ben Williams said Freeman was driving a 1997 Nissan Maxima belonging to Demaris Meyer of Memphis when the car left a rural highway and flipped several times shortly before midnight Sunday. "There's no indication that either alcohol or drugs were involved," Williams said. He said both Freeman and Meyer were wearing seat belts. The woman's condition was not immediately available. Freeman was airlifted to the hospital in Tennessee. Clay McFerrin, editor of Sun Sentinel in Charleston, said he arrived at the accident scene on Mississippi Highway 32 soon after it happened about 5 miles west of Charleston, not far from where Freeman owns a home with his wife. McFerrin said it appeared that Freeman's car was airborne when it left the highway and landed in a ditch. "They had to use the jaws of life to extract him from the vehicle," McFerrin said. "He was lucid, conscious. He was talking, joking with some of the rescue workers at one point." McFerrin said bystanders converged on the scene trying to get a glimpse of the actor. When one person tried to snap a photo with a cell phone camera, Freeman joked, "no freebies, no freebies," McFerrin said. Freeman won an Oscar for his role in "Million Dollar Baby." His screen credits also include "The Shawshank Redemption," "Driving Miss Daisy" and "The Dark Knight," now in theaters. He was born in Memphis, Tenn., but spent much of his childhood in the Mississippi Delta. He is a co-owner of the Ground Zero Blues Club in Clarksdale. The hospital where Freeman is being treated is commonly known as The Med, and is an acute-care teaching facility that serves patients within 150 miles of Memphis. |

Cynique, my boyfriend sent me this news via text message. He's always threatening to off my secret crush, so I'm investigating his whereabouts last evening. He has an alibi, but it is far from airtight. I trust everyone here observed an appropriate moment of silence in gratitude for the safe-keeping of Mr. Freeman, and that vigil will be held around the clock until his safe return home to his wife (*eyeroll*) And who is this Demaris chick anyway? That is all. **putting fabulous little black dress with matching veil back into the closet** |

I heard that they were clowning him on the Tom Joyner Morning Show--"Driving Miss Daisy's Granddaughter"--because the woman in the car was younger and white. |

Morgan must be having a late mid-life crisis. Or perhaps just fulfilling his "bucket list"? (Unless 70+ yrs old is the new mid-life...) At any rate, I do hope he fully recovers. I agree with Ntfs about his acting abilities. (Even if I can't fully see FK's thang for him! LOL) |

Ol Morgan resisted a long time but the jungle fever finally got him. I hate to think what was distracting him while he was driving? He sure lost it. |

Well, I never second guess or speculate about the activities of other peoples personal lives. It's no ones business. I've always maintained this position (which runs contrary to today's vicious celebrity rumor mills and tabloid frenzies). The man has been separated from his wife since Dec 2007. Both are free to seek the company and interaction with whomever they please. I've never understood the pathetic preoccupation with the personal lives of other people. As I've stated before, I think Morgan Freeman is a great actor but I have no interest whatsoever about his personal life. I'm probably the only one who feels this way but I'm sure he would appreciate it. I have no idea what caused his accident but I refuse to join the chorus line of acerbic rumors by the harpies who monitor the private lives of people they personally don't know. |

The speculation and malicious rumors come with the territory of being a celebrity. That's the trade-off for being a black icon. Sooner or later your feet of clay will betray you. Nobody escapes the glare of the taboid or mainstream press, including the president of the United States. |

I think it's pretty stunning that a man of Freeman's fame and wealth has managed to stay married to ANYBODY - Black, White or Heyna - for nearly TWENTY FIVE years. Especially since they did NOT make children during there marriage and that his success as a actor is (unlike, say a politician or corporate CEO) is NOT predicated upon his appearing to be a happily married man. And, you know, it's entirely possible Morgan's eventual ex-wife is just as much (if not more) responsible for their breakup as Morgan. Regardless, I wish Morgan a speedy and full recovery and I wish them all the best. |

When this first happened I had this vision of Morgan being found in the wreckage with his pants down around his ankles and some young thing...well, do I need to spell it out? But I laid back in the cut. "They'll think I'm a dirty old man." "A Playa hata" "One of them crabs in a barrell Negroes" Well looky here! Wonder will he be able to play God again after this? |

(Cynique you old reprobate (reprobatess?) Thank Goodness I got somebody else on here I can trade dirty minded suppositions with. Getting some Lewinsky while barrelling down a two lane black top must be quite an experience. Remember Teddy Pendergrass?) |

Was "heyna" supposed to be hyena - which is actually a dog-like scavenger?? Was "zebra", an animal which is both black and white, the example meant to be cited??? |

I heard it took them hours to pry her jaws open from around his--well, you know. THIS IS THE CURSE OF THE BAT!!!! First, Heath Ledger dies from his own hand, driven mad by playing the Joker and the never ending jibes from playing Brokeback Mountain. Then, Christian Bale goes crazy and attacks his Mama, beating her to a pulp. Now this. Whose next? And what will happen to the unwary souls who saw this movie? Will it be like the Curse of King Tut's Tomb? Or thefate that befell the cast of "Ghenghis Khan"? |
