Hey, Tonya...I didn't realize that it did make it to AlterNet. Thanks! Now where's that contract... ;-) |

Wow, FK, congrats! I hope you are feasting on the rich comments. (While ignoring the ignorant "Who cares about Black mothers" ones.) I remember during your brainstorming phase there were many more issues you would have liked to address, but hey--it's only one article, afterall. Haviong said that, one useful comment I saw (granted, only checked out the first couple pages) had to do with class issues and these "momoirs" including lack of Black momoirs. Of course that is an issue, but I am not sure there is a way to overcome it. Will there be a new "street lit" genre featuring the voices of low income mothers? A "street chick-lit" genre? Not likely, as I can not imagine who the audience would be for such books. Is "hip hop feminism" addressing the motherhood concerns of such women? Perhaps. Or, if not, then maybe it could. (Though the little I have read of this work still seems to be by pretty privileged folks, so maybe it still would not fit the bill.) |

Yvette: I read the first few comments posted when Tonya gave the link, but I've made a conscious decision to not read anymore, lol! It's too tempting to jump into the discussion and the last thing I need is another distraction (stealing Thumper's trademark raised eyebrow and raising it at my dear friends here at TC). But that class comment was definitely on point. There's a woman putting together an anthology that seeks to give voice to a wider array of mothers writing about mothering--across class, race, sexual orientation, everything--it's called "Who's Your Mama?" But I don't know where it stands right now. |

That anthology sounds interesting. I'll have to keep an eye out. It's too tempting to jump into the discussion and the last thing I need is another distraction LOL, yup. Girl, if you did read it, you'd prolly end up having to get you high hell on (Carey, 2008)! |

Yvette: I told my BoyToy that I was not reading any more of those comments. So what does he do? Start reading the comments to me. First, he wants to know if he can read me just the ones that are positive. Then he starts arguing with the ones that are negative. "Dear? Do you remember the part where I said I don't want to read the comments? You are reading me the comments. STOP!" But it's nice to have a cheerleader. He took the article I wrote about my Nay-Nay and had the text and images framed and matted. It's beautiful! |

Hello Kitty Did I tell you that I read the Nay-Nay article? Well if I didn't I am telling you now, it was wonderful. Very delightful piece. I was honestly surprised. I thought you just camped out at home and fixed your guy his favorite meal. Yeah, you got some skills, yes you do. |
