Someone forwarded me a NY Times Article. The Times usually pisses me off when they write about Black folks 'cause they typically show the our most pathetic side. To be sure the NYT couchs these artilces in sympatheic terms and tone. But this is only to pander to their liberal audience at the expense of Black people. The late quote was from a Brother in Harlem about my age who said in response to a recent shooting where 8 people were injured said, “I was praying something like this would happen to keep them out...” You can read the whole article here: http://tinyurl.com/5uxaqd One can reasonably assume the dude quoted was a "Brother" and that he was talking about white people. The NY Times LIVES for these eggregiously asinine statements. The fact that Black people too are reluctant to come to Harlem for the same reason is unimportant to the Times. It is already a cliché that local news programs will get the most ignorant sounding or looking Black people to quote on the scene of some news story. Consider the imagery: Ozier Muhammad/The New York Times, June 13, 2008 Decent white folks casually dine outside sipping iced coffee and latte's while a Brother strolls with a "40" in hand. SIDEBAR This cafe if around the corner from my house. I was in there to buy some French bread for dinner that night. There was a white guy who just got a small, regular cup of coffee to go. The Cashier told him the price and at the same time told him there was a price increase. The coffee was not $2.75 (or thereabouts). The White guy complained; (1) that he was not told up front and (2) that the price was outrageous -- even more than starbucks a few blocks away. He say the Cafe was making a mistake and that he would never buy coffee from there again. I've stopped buying coffee, to go, there myself during the last price increase. Fortunately, there are increasingly more options in Harlem so I don't have to pay 3 Bucks for a cup of java. |

One can reasonably assume the dude quoted was a "Brother" and that he was talking about white people. The NY Times LIVES for these eggregiously asinine statements. (Those bastards are liable to have made them up. They have done that many times in the past, most recently in the run up to the Iraq War) The NY Times LIVES for these eggregiously asinine statements. The fact that Black people too are reluctant to come to Harlem for the same reason is unimportant to the Times. (It's been years now but I felt safer in Harlem when I was there than I do around the block from my own house in the STL. Screw them if they are scared. They can know how we feel when we are driving/walking through a white neighborhood. This cafe if around the corner from my house. I was in there to buy some French bread for dinner that night (Next thing we know you'll be wearing your sweater around your neck tied by the arms and eating scones. Get on over to Sylvia's Black Man!) The White guy complained; (1) that he was not told up front and (2) that the price was outrageous -- even more than starbucks a few blocks away. He said the Cafe was making a mistake and that he would never buy coffee from there again. (What an idiot! He doesn't check the price on something before he buys it or asks? They should have beat him down and thrown him out) |

Yukio, yeah seems the violence started in Marcus Garvey Park and continued to 125th and 8th... "Him and the individual were just walking past each other, they bumped into each other, the individual said, 'Oh that's how it is,' and he just turned around and shot my son three times,” Just Google: shoot harlem 6 injured for more on the mayhem. Chris, honest to God some of those quotes struck me as odd and I considered that they might be fabricated. The NYT quote dude saying something outlandish then quotes same dude quoting something more lucid than one would expect from the same person during the same conversation. I actually considered looking up the dude who made the first quote I posted. I may still do it yet to get the full story. Man, whatchu know about Sylvia's? I may have eatten at sylvia's 5 times in the last two decades (including the one in Atlanta). If I spend money to go out and eat I'm usually trying to eat something I don't make at home. Besides my Fried Chicken and potate salad is as good as anyones. Sylvia's is for tourists, mainly. Regarding the side bar: Like I said I stopped buying coffee at the last price increase. I did not ask the price before hand either, nor did I complain. I let me money talk for me. A 3 foot long french bread cost $1.50 in the same establishment. Besides I figure if enough people stopped paid those prices then do something about it. However I also know many business are being priced out due to rising rents. So they may have other pressure to deal with. If they can get away with $3 coffee with some may other charging less -- then God bless'em. Seems like every piece of business realestate is being taken over by a bank. 5 minutes ag there were no banks in Harlem -- now there is one everywhere! |

If I spend money to go out and eat I'm usually trying to eat something I don't make at home. LOL--I hear you, brother! One of my guilty pleasures is a show on the Food network where this guy goes all over the world eating bizarre food dishes (e.g., made with bugs, testicles, brains, etc). The other day I saw an episode about this restaurant where you bring a cooler of your own meat and grill it yourself out back. Um. No, thanks, I can do that at my own house! LOL |

“I was praying something like this would happen to keep them out...” Bro Troy, I agree. It's Sad. Another example of a self absorbed racist ignorant Negro who believes shooting innocent people is a good thing. As if such negative publicity does not feed into fear and exacerbates preexisting racial suspicion and beliefs. Incidents like this do not serve the interest of the residents of Harlem. Trust me..... |

Ntfs_encryption, the more I think about quotes like these the less inclined I am not to believe them. The next year or so will be critical in my neighborhood. It is posed to become majority white during this time. Yvettep, a BYOMB restaurant?! AND you have ot cook the meat too. Was there no other benefit to eating in the restaurant As far a bugs, testicles, brains, you can get those in NYC and probably many major cities. |

Hello Troy This is an interesting discussion. This is the time I wish I had the skills of encryption, Kitty or Vet. I would pay a few dollars to be able to articulate my thought as effectively as they do. Every since Tonya laid on me that picture of that old white man and Kitty hit me with the cane thang I've been deflated and will have to work with what I have *smile*. I really do love their vocabularies and writng styles...so succinct. Anyway, you mentioned Harlem having more banks. It has been a while since I've been to Harlem and I can't quite visualize where banks could be. Don't get me wrong, there where many sore spots as you know so maybe you can tell me a little about the place since I've been there. A little background first: I was born in the projects and in my early years of fatherhood one of my kids was raised in a black neighborhood until we moved into a predominately white one. Upon returning to our old neighborhood, while traveling with my family..... out for a little drive, my daughter said, "here we are back in Town". I was blown away and had a few choice words for her. I thought it was a time for a long trip and decided my children needed a little cultural exchange, we drove to Harlem. Packed up the kids in my old school Lincoln and headed east. When we arrived in Harlem I thought my daughter frightened and would break and run. Oh no, she jumper out of the car like she had "arrived". She sprung into action like a tour guide. My son didn't know what to make of all the black folk, he was born in Iowa! Harlem inspired my daughter. She's now a world traveler, loves the adventure. She ran in the Penn Relays and went back to Harlem and proudly says "this is where it all began"...so poetic...such a Drama Queen...a real fool, just like her daddy *lol* Back to Harlem, where approximately do you live? Although I was driving I was sort of picky because I didn't want to run down a street and expose my family to some unexpected gloom. Hey, I was born in Iowa *smile*. Of course I did the Apolo thing and I know the location of Adam Clayton Powell. I also want to actually see 110th ST, Yeah, the movie "across 110th St", hey, I was born in Iowa. I guess I am trying to say that Banks and white folks just doesn't quite fit my image. Now, Cinncinatti fried chicken sticks out. I never could understand that one. Cinncinatti fried chicken in Harlem. So, I know where broadway ave/st is located, I can see the Harlem river, I crossed the bridge going to NJ. Give me a picture. I have another great story about my family in Harlem but I'll save that for another day. It was the 4th of July...Harlem on the forth of July, 198? Carey Carey |

"The next year or so will be critical in my neighborhood. It is posed to become majority white during this time." Bro Troy, it's been many years since I was in Harlem. I do recall when I was young, it was virtually all black. But over the years, I saw a large influx of Koreans migrating and settling in. I've also heard about this genderification of Harlem and it's white yuppification also. I'm not a racist so I don't know what to really say. But I'm sure there is some concern by it's historically black residents. Any thoughts or commentary.....? |

Everyone has the own style of articulation and writing. And for the record, the old man with the cane was meant for me. It's Tonya's way of mocking me. Just like I posted the picture of the pancakes for her. She knows what it means. Ha! Ha! Ha! Ha! |

NTFS: Carey is referring the the cane mentioned in a Joni Mitchell lyric (from the jazz thread). He knows I think he's dapper...and not decrepit. ;-) Now as for you and Tonya and canes and pancakes...carry on, lol! |
