"A French court recognizes virginity—or lack thereof—as grounds for annulment. 5 June 2008 ...Youssef is a 30-year-old engineer who had married Karima, a student. Youssef is described as a practicing, though not extremist, Muslim, who wanted a "pure" wife. On their wedding night, horror of horrors, Youssef was not able to produce the sheet stained with blood to the assembled guests of both families waiting for it. He therefore felt deeply dishonored. He went to the court seeking an annulment. His lawyer, Xavier Labbée, argued that the issue was not the bride's lack of virginity, but the lies that she had told the groom before the marriage. If he had known that she was not a virgin, Labbée argued, Youssef would not have married Karima. Like a dishonest tradesman selling defective goods, she had misrepresented what was on offer. And Karima admitted that she had understood that if her husband knew she was not a virgin, he would not have married her, Labbée said. His client "was convinced that he could not construct a solid union based upon a lie." The court accepted Labbée’s argument and annulled the marriage..." http://www.city-journal.org/2008/eon0605td.html Imagine if MOST premarital lies, especially those about SEX, were used to annul AMERICAN marriages...Hahahahahahahaha!!! |

The article: “Essential Quality” These might include, for example, drug addiction, a previous divorce, an undisclosed religious persuasion, or a criminal record. The Youssef/Karima matter is the first time, however, that virginity has been legally recognized among such essential qualities. The vice president of the local council of Muslims said that the case had nothing to do with Islam, since Islam does not require virginity before marriage; it was the bride’s lying that was legally important. Nope, doesn't seem extreme to me. Guess I'mma true cavewoman at heart, lol! |

"Guess I'mma true cavewoman at heart, lol!" Not really. Just a difference of opinion and belief. I just think it is sad a potentially good woman and wife got canned because her hymen wasn't intact. And yes, I do realize in some societies and cultures chasity is a sacred issue and virginity alone determines a woman's worth. The case presented here is a perfect example. If this man seeks a virgin....well...good luck and I hope he finds one. But I personally would not dismiss a woman because of it. I dunno....perhaps it's my Western acculturation....*Shrugs*..... |

(Right. This is BS. How can you hold a woman responsible for what she did before she knew you (now, if she lost it while she was ENGAGED to you, that might be another story) I knew a woman who--I am trying to say this nicely--she was--let us say, sexually active. Let us say she was the Go To Gal when you wanted to have sex. Let us say that time, place, number of partners, was no impediment. She wasn't a bad looking woman. She wasn't dumb or anything. She was, in those unenlightened times, the kind of woman you didn't want nobody to know you were with. She got married and made this guy a wonderful wife. Everybody who knew her when started wishing maybe they'd have hooked up with her (she left town with her new husband--I think the change of climate helped) Screw it. She's better off without that prig anyway. She'll make somebody a good woman. |
