Sound bites do not do his comments justice. See the full text here: http://thepage.time.com/obama-addresses-church-decision/ Some of my favorite highlights: ...Q: Do you think it will be possible for you to join a black church, or a historically black church, or do you think as matter of, do you think that political correctness is going to be an issue in this election and that will be a factor in the racial mix of the church that you join? BO: It’s an interesting question. I do think that — I said this earlier, that there is a different religious tradition or a worshipping style in some of the historically African American churches and other churches. But I am confident that we are going to be able to find a church we feel comfortable with and that will reflect our concerns and values. But I do think there is a cultural and a stylistic gap that has come into play in this issue. Q: Senator Obama, there has been a lot of speculation when you joined the church 20 years ago it was a good opportunity for you based on what you wanted to do at that time. What do you say to those who say this is more opportunism on your part because as you embark on this new venture the church has now become a problem for you? What do you say to them? BO: Well, first of all, I guess I would challenge the initial premise. It’s hard to understand how exactly the church was helpful to me in — please expand on your argument. What is the argument when I joined this church 20 years ago it was doing what? Q: That as you were starting out as community organizer, this was a crucial church in the community and it afforded you a lot of contacts with important people in the community. BO: There are a lot of big churches on the south side of Chicago. Come to the south side sometime. There are a whole bunch of churches that were better connected politically so I reject that notion which I think is a very cynical one that I would join a church simply to maneuver politically. And I am offended by the suggestion. Point number one. Point number two, if I had wanted to be politically convenient then presumably when the problem surfaced with some of Reverend Wright’s statements the day of my announcement, presumably that’s when I would have thought about distancing myself from the church. I don’t think anybody can suggest that I have really tried to make this work because I have cared about my relationship to the people of that church, who I care for very deeply. ...Q: I was interested just in following up on that. I mean, you did – obviously the church you attended — woven into it, right? Is the notion of the poor as having sort of a privileged place in God’s eye and all this sort of thing? As you look for a new church- BO: So does the Bible, by the way. Q: Yeah. No, no, no, I’m not arguing that. BO: I understand. I was just pointing that out... |

I watched it on Fox News as long as I could stand it. Half hour of a Negro eating booty. This does not bode well for his Presidency. |

"This does not bode well for his Presidency." I agree, not at all. He may have ended his Presidency, in fact, w/that decision. For the first time, I'm hearing folks express doubt about him and his candidacy, and I heard it all weekend. It does not look good. He needs these folks to turn out in some seriously heavy numbers just to have a chance at winning in Nov. |

He is looking weak. Apologizing. Backing up. Resigning. They are going to start going to town on him. He is supposed to be the Leader of the Free World. Commander in Chief. Man with His Finger on the Button. With the flick of a wrist, he will make decisions to have people dying like flies--or not. But somebody apologizing all the time don't cut it |

But somebody apologizing all the time don't cut it Where did he say he was "apologizing"? Must have missed it. They are going to start going to town on him. LOL! As if "they" would have otherwise gone easy on him! BTW--What is going on with Tavis Smiley, Chris/Carey? |

Chris, you can handle the Travis Smiley thang *smile*. Yvettep, for me it's just a black man thang....I can't explain it. Smiley aside, I have a thang about black menn that cut off their mustache.....see...I can't explain that to you....well, I could but I'll heed on the side of caution. Ditto Yvette: Obama was by no means apologizing. He was walking a thin robe because his every word is frequently beaten up and flipped around. (one of the fresh writer postees can work with that...flipped & beaten :-))Anyway, the brotha basically said, no matter what church or what side of town he decides to "do him" somebody is going to cry foul. It makes no difference if it's a 7 Eleven....if somebody robs it...and he's been there.....SHAME ON OBAMA bought some gum at that same liquor store! How do you defend that and not give them more fuel for the fire. The man did a great job.....for those that were trying to hear him....and feel him. Now, church can be a slippery slope...do I need to say more...about church...and church folk? Come to think of it that would be a good thought for my Sunday thang. Carey Carey |
