Bill Cosby goes hip hop with album to be released in May; rhymes provided by guest rappers By SANDY COHEN, AP Entertainment Writer Tue Apr 15, 12:46 AM ET LOS ANGELES - Bill Cosby's path has taken him from pudding pops to hip hop. ADVERTISEMENT The 70-year-old has recorded a hip-hop album set for release next month. "Cosby Narratives Vol. 1: State of Emergency" blends the comedian's concepts and stories with a hip-hop, pop and jazz soundtrack. "I do not rap on any of these things," Cosby told The Associated Press on Monday. "I wouldn't know how to fix my mouth to say some of the words." Cosby said the hip-hop music he hears is profane and degrading. His album is "the opposite of what I think is the profanity for no particular reason, the misogyny for no particular reason," he said. "It really looks at the frustration and the anger that a young man may have." The album, assembled by Cosby's longtime musical collaborator Bill "Spaceman" Patterson, contains rhymes provided by guest rappers. The subject matter? "The value of an education. The value of respecting one's self and ... giving (listeners) a chance to raise their self-esteem and confidence," Cosby said. Patterson said he was surprised when Cosby first inquired about making a rap record Ñ until the comedian revealed he wouldn't be the one doing the rapping. "People started speculating, is he going to rap about Jell-O Pudding Pops or what?" Patterson said. "But he's always been involved in music and he was there for the first generation of spoken word. ... He has always understood rap's potential, but he was appalled by the foul language and the misogyny Ñ the way people used a medium that could be used to elevate people, to open their eyes and provoke thought." Cosby made the album as a companion to his 2007 best-selling book, "Come on, People: On the Path from Victims to Victors." And though he doesn't expect the CD to be a huge hit, it won't be his last hip-hop venture. "We can do even better," he said. "The next one will be even more cheerleading." |

As long as the beats are "hype", "dope", "fresh", "Phat", "Funky" or whatever the words now then it might have a chance. I have observed that if a song can not be played in a strip club then it has little chance of selling very well. |

Also if the rap has a certain hypnotic cadence the words will spiral themselves into the listener's psyche. So this may well be a subliminal way to get positive messsages across. |

It's never embarrassing when our dignitaries cut loose and let their hair down so to speak. I'm still waiting for George Herbert Walker Bush to bust a move!, maybe do a tour with Aerosmith; how proud that would make so many people. Hippin and rappin and shoutin 'bout self-respect and self-esteem. How sweet. |

So much for Cosby's fine sentiments. He'll do anything to stay in the public eye. I'm looking for him to pose nude or make a sex tape next. |

Kid do listen to the lyrics of music. They can sing their favorites word-for-word. And the catchy rhymes are one of the appeals of Rap music. Talk about somebody being out of touch. I haven't heard the term "neck" since the early 60s. |

Listen carefully now, Lame Brain. We were talking about Rap. Rap is spoken music. You responded to my comment in regard to lyrics being able to penetrate the brain of kids by saying that kids don't listen to music, they dance to it. Rap music cannot be separated from its lyrics. If kids are dancing to it, or to any other kind of music for that matter, then they are listening to it. You can't keep time to the music while dancing if you are not listening to it. (I guess an off-beat oaf like you would be the exception.) Now go back to reminiscing about necking with your girlfriend in lover's lane after the sock hop that was held in the gym. Can you believe how Elvis stole "You Ain't Nothin But A Hound Dog" from Big Mama Thornton? |

Can you believe how Elvis stole "You Ain't Nothin But A Hound Dog" from Big Mama Thornton? (I'm still grieving over that--but some white boys wrote it anyway, so I guess it was no theft) |
