(Kristal Brent Zook, who is the author of Black Women's Lives: Stories of Pain and Power, just wrote a book about Blks in broadcasting I See Black People. Seriously, I did not know Blacks owned any media. I've been saying for the longest, Blacks need some control over the media! Well, apparently, we got some; though, now, it's going down in a crisis): http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=89628997

I heard this broadcast. Yes, blacks owned media--they owned far more radio and tv stations in the past than they do now. The problem is that these stations are becoming worth more and more and the big conglomerates are buying them up. The other problem, as it always has been, is ads. You don't get the ads, you don't pay the bills. Now, let's say you are a business. Would you want your ad to play on a little black 5,000 watt station, or a big, white 50,000 one? And so it goes. |
