I can't believe that it's been 40 years since Dr. Martin Luther King was assassinated. It seems like just yestereday when I was lying in bed working a crossword puzzle, listening to music on my clock radio, when they interrupted the program to annouce that King had been shot dead. My husband and small children were elsewhere in the house, engaged in various activites, and I jumped up to go run and tell them the awful news.
My children were confused and my husband and I were both stunned. In the days that followed I was once again glued to my TV set watching as a nation which was just recovering from the assassination of its young president was now in mass mourning again, this time for its black messiah. I wondered who would be next, suspecting that it might be Malcolm X. And it was.

Have times changed since then? A little. I just hope Martin and Malcolm are watching over Barak.

RIP, MLK :-(

Nice sentiment, Cynique.

Of course his "Dream" speech gets much more press and recognition. But I have always been mor emoved by the speech he gave the day before his murder. It was so prophetic it was downright eerie.

(There are several video and audio clips of it floating around, as well as a multi-part special on NPR.)

When you put it that way (Martin and Malcolm watching over Barack) it brings a little more comfort to those who are so scared for him and his family right now. Regardless of what party or candidate you are supporting history shows that Barack and his family live under the constant threat of death by violence. I truly hope that they are acting as angels of protection for the Obama family. On a day like today I wonder if he and Michelle reflect on the "what ifs" or the dangers of his running for president?

The special they're running on CNN is sad to the point where it’s almost depressing....Either money & power is taking us backwards or Obama was categorically wrong when he said conditions aren’t "static". Bull. I’ve never seen so many plantation niggrahs and owners in my life. The scene may be different--you’ve got more Blacks dressed up and behind the mike--but the situation and characters are exactly the same. The ONLY up-side is Obama was not there. Even tho some of the shit he says is downright erroneous he’s the aspirant for change therefore his absence from this event is quite fitting.

"I just hope Martin and Malcolm are watching over Barak."

So do I. Both were monumentally historical figures. I don't get into the romanticizing about King but he was a very critical figure in American history. I recall when Ralph Abernathy wrote his book and lamented about Kings affairs with other women. Negroes lost their minds and demanded his head on a platter and hysterically dismissed Abernathy as a liar and traitor. It was sad. What Abernathy said was true and he had no reason to lie about it. I personally never lowered my opinion about King because of the controversy. Philandering is very common among men of power and influence. Not condoning or suggesting that it is a good thing but I don't get into moralizing histrionics and condemnations. But Kings assassination (along with brother Malcolm's) is a sad and tragic chapter in American history.

"Regardless of what party or candidate you are supporting history shows that Barack and his family live under the constant threat of death by violence."

Why would he be under the constant threat of death and violence? He should be no more loathed and hated than Bush who has earned the right to be hated. Is he under the threat of death more than Hillary Clinton or John McCain? And if so, why? The man is a senator running for president (just as Hillary and McCain). Why would he and his family differ (in reference to death threats or violence) from the other candidates? He is not the POTUS with an administration history and FUBAR's like Bush.

Anybody is fair game to the kooks out there, but I do think Obama would top the list for these nutcases since he's black and because, in addition to being crazy, these people are more likely to be racists.

Yep, Yvette, MLK's "been to the mountain top" speech is certainly eerily prophetic. In the video clips of this speech you can see that he is visibly shaken at the conclusion of it and as he walks away from the microphone, he almost collapses in Abernathy's arms.

Funny, I know where I was when I heard Kennedy got shot, but don't remember where I was when I heard about Martin or when--

I remember the next day there was almost a riot at school.

I remember I was in DC a few days later--4 pm curfew, machineguns on the white house lawn, Airborne Troopers sealing off the ghetto, pumes of smoke hanging over DC, black folks just walkin walkin walkin

America loves the smell of napalm in the morning.

Ntfs, Ill try to give you my most deep thought provoking answers to your last post. Perhaps I am a tad jaded due to all of the MLK programming this weekend, but here goes:

"Why would he and his family differ (in reference to death threats or violence) from the other candidates?"
-Cause they’re Black

"He should be no more loathed and hated than Bush who has earned the right to be hated"
-Should be, but he’s black

"Is he under the threat of death more than Hillary Clinton or John McCain? And if so, why?"
-Yep, Cause he's black

"Why would he and his family differ (in reference to death threats or violence) from the other candidates?"
-Cause they're black

"He is not the POTUS with an administration history and FUBAR's like Bush."
I know…. but he's black
