What are the names of the seven African-American women who have been nominated for the Best Actress Academy Award? Hint: only one of them has won (Courtesy of Black Classic Movies: http://www.blackclassicmovies.com/index.html. But no peeking!) |

Whoopi Goldberg - The Color Purple Halle Berry - Monster's Ball Diana Ross - Lady Sing The Blues Cicely Tyson - Sounder Angela Basset - What's Love Got To Do With It Those are all that come to mind. Btw: I believe Ross and Tyson were nominated the SAME year (1972 or 1973), which, I suppose, might have worked against EITHER of them winning the Oscar. |

**Diana Ross - Lady Sing The Blues** Miss Ross caught flack for that portrayal because she was so physically dissimilar to Billie Holiday, but I enjoyed her performance. This movie was my introduction to Lady Day. |

BTW, I didn't peek. I remember very clearly watching the Oscars back in the 1950s when Dorothy was nominated for this role. The camera panned in on her face and it reflected both pessimism and optimism. |

Stay where you belong, chrishayden, over there with those boring mopes singing the praises of Atlanta, an island in the sea of crackerville, rife with crime and poverty. |

whoppi goldberg was the only one who deserved the damn award. i am definitely not a fan of whoopi (i dont hate her either) but i have to say her portrayol of sealy was the best performances i have ever seen by an actress. |
