I'm Voting for Barack Obama - Period! http://aalbc.com/blog/2007/02/im-voting-for-barack-obama-period I was googling "Obama" on my web site and came up with this blog post from exactly a year ago (man time is flying!). I ultimately did register as a Democrat and cast a vote for Barack Obama. It was a proud moment. For a second I imagined what it must have been like for a person who was just given the right to vote. This was the first vote I cast where I was actually excited about the candidate and not just voting for one low life over another. While I freely admit I decided to vote for Obama primarily (but not solely) becuase he is Black. A year later, I do believe he is the best candidate.

he's the right person for the job, had he ran against colin powell i would have voted for powell instead. i wouldn't have ever voted for jesse jackson or sharpton when they ran because they just don't have "it". but i can understand why a black person might vote for baraka just because he's black alone ... someone has to help balance out those of whom will vote against him just for that reason. |

I believe the issue of Black foks voting for Obama because he's Black is pretty ridiculous. There weren't many Black votes for Al Sharpton and Carol Mosely-Braun during the 2004 Democratic campaign. Sure Barack's being a Black is partly why many African American support him. But emphasizing that ignores the fact that dude has been getting as many or more WHITE votes than Hillary. Dude won every county in the almost entirely WHITE Washington State. He got 80% of the votes in the WHITE Idaho. Barack Obama is NOT just a Black thing. |

It'll never happen... LOL, Urban_scribe. I try to not ever say "never," but you have a point. At the least it would take a huge "make-over" campaign to get people to take a really unbiased look at other political systems besides what we are used to in this country. When we liven in Germany on an Army base, I had a friend who used to argue with military folks about political systems. He would take folks on point by point about why Socialism was bad and wrong, in the end showing them how the military life they were a part of had many aspects in common with what a socialist political system in the US might look like. I do not know enough about the finer points of socialism to know how spot-on he was, but these were always interesting conversations to observe... |

Barak presidency is a black thing. Without black people voting for him, he will not be elected. The point his detractors make is that he is an acceptable black, because he is actually an oreo who when he gets into office, will not rock the boat. I don't know why Blacks who claim to have so much pride, have such a hard time admitting that they are voting for Barak because he's black. If a white candidate with the same credentials was running against him, Barak's being black would be why blacks would choose him. |

Women are voting for Hillary because she's a woman, and without a majority of women voting for her she will lose--which is exactly what's happening. Obama is pulling women away from her and she's tanking. I cast a vote for him proudly (yesterday), too. It really did feel like a "first"--even though I've voted in every presidential election since age 18. I'll admit it's partially due to his race but not only because he's black. There are a lot of black leaders I would never have voted for as president. I think Obama will make a great president. www.conniebriscoe.com |

Implicit in this erroneous notion that Black foks are voting for Barack solely because he's Black ignores the question of WHY Blacks (and NON-Blacks) would/should OTHERWISE be so much more motivated to support Clinton when there really is no such reason. And, especially lately, Blacks are NOT the only cannot reach a persuasive reason that benefits Hillary. |

What a subjective "analysis". You offer nothing but an opinion in your assessment of Hillary Clinton. Her followers attest to her superior credentials and qualifications and who is to say that Obama is a better candidate, other than someone who is a follower of his. This race is about the "cult of personality" phenomenon. |

Step up folks, and refute my contention that every black person who supports Obama does so because he is black, but every black person who doesn't support Obama doesn't do so because he is black. I personally know ONE White guy who supports BO just because he's Black. When I asked him why he supported BO, I expected some sort of long, drawnout philosophical response, but he said, "White presidents have been phuckin up this country since it was founded. I feel a Black president deserves an equal opportunity to phuck up this country too!" And he meant that. |

The same thing applies to black women who support Hillary; they're sick of men screwin up. White people supporting Obama have pure motives for supporting him. But black people support him arbitrarily. Just as Black people are very loath to oust another black in favor of a white candidate at all levels of politics. |

But black people support him arbitrarily. So Black Obama supporters are unable to look at all the candidates and choose him as the best candidate, but Whites (and others) who support him can? Well, that is certainly not something I agree with--any more than I think White women are automatically "arbitrary" about Sen Clinton. |

Because Blacks have no choice but to be bonded to their race. Again, Cynique, I cannot see your reasoning here. For example, I have several relatives and friends who are Black service providers--physicians, accountants, business owners. If anything, Blacks are harder on other Blacks than WHites rather than "bonded" to them. Blacks can and do demonstrate choice (and sometimes, anti-Black bias) in the political realm, too. Being Black may not be a choice--any more than being female is. But choosing to support a candidate who happens to be Black male or White female is a choice. |

What about John Edwards was so drastically different from Obama? Yes, he was a legal shark but Obama is not exactly a pro bono lawyer. Edwards talked about relieving the burden of the middle class, about reducing poverty, about stemming corporate greed, things that should've resonated with black folks, but black people blatantly ignored him. Why? Because they preferred a black candidate. Instead of white people supporting Edwards, or Biden for that matter, - steeped in their guilt they rise above their prejudice and support a black man who is palatable.

Frankly, I do not think Edwards' staff did a good enough job of developing his "brand." I think it was hard for folks of all stripes to get past an obviously wealthy White man claiming to do these laudable things, when the higher profile candidacies of the first White woman and Black man competed against it. I wish he would have stayed in the race a little longer--I think he had some important ideas that have not been sufficiently addressed by either of the others. It is fine to decry the boundless enthusiasm and high emotionality of some supporters for Clinton and Obama. But these two have done what countless White male Democratic candidates have been unable to do--energize the citizens and get people involved in the political process in ways they never have been before.

As far as black people loathing Hillary, I'd venture to say that their dislike against Hillary has its roots in race; they think she and her husband pimped black folks. Voting for a black man is their way of giving white people their comeuppance. |

Some black folks support Obama because they loathe Hillary. Yes, FK, and I have heard some White Democrats and independents voicing the same reservations. Early in her campaign I think she did a good job of setting herself apart from her husband's presidency--for example by choosing to put her first name and not her last on her materials. But not enough time had past for many folks to get over the bad taste that President Clinton left in their mouths, IMO*. She really should have kept him playing a background role. Cynique, If black people are only voting for Obama because he's black, then why didn't they do the same for Jesse Jackson when he ran, or Al Sharpton for that matter when her ran. Jesse and Al Sharpton didn't have the white backing necessary to mount legitimate campaigns. White folks didn't and don't want black preachers for presidential candidates, and blacks didn't take these 2 seriously, feeling a vote for them wouldn've been wasted. And Jesse and Al cast their hats in the ring during eras when black people ran for president as token gestures and to go down in history. |

"Some black folks support Obama because they loathe Hillary." Ferociouskitty, you can count me in that mix. I so desparately do not want Bill and Hillary in the white house again, that I would vote for the Republican candidate if Hillary is any where near the ticket. Of course it does not hurt that Barack is a Brother. At the end of the day white folks are catching hell too. They are having homes go into foreclosure, dying in the middle east, having pension funds raided, and making less and less in real dollars year after year. Of course they want some thing better and are willing to "take a chance" with a Black man who is not just taking shit like a Sharpton and Jackson. For crying out loud Sharpton's lack of support for Obama should make thing very plain, very plain indeed...

cynique that may be true for some black people, but to generalize the entire race isn't a good call. alan keys runs damn near every year and he would never get the black vote and all that fool had was white supporters. i had a white coworker make the same comment to me about blacks automatically voting for obama simply because he was black, but yet was a little offended when i said that she (a catholic republican) would most certainly be voting for hillary then. look at the candidates black, white, orange, or brown ... obama is the best choice for democrats (and republicans) |

"Barack Obama is NOT just a Black thing." This is very true. The man has transcended the traditional race hurtles most black politicians face. This not a universal axiom for the entire country, but the man is being taken "very seriously" by both major political parties -Democratic and Republican. The man has great charisma and appeal. Even hard line right wing conservatives like Sean Hannity, Bernard Goldberg and Newt Gingrich have gone on record saying so.

Ntfs, Indeed. There a bit of over-analysis occurring here when the phenomenon of Obama is pretty simple: Foks genuinely LIKE Obama better than they do any of the other foks who have campaigned. And you cannot manufacture, predict and scheme for or against likeability any more than you against a brotha getting a boner looking at a sista with a PHATbooty. There is the REAL hope that MANY people have that Obama can help usher in the end business as usual in DC. And I agree with Ferociouskitty and Troy another HUGE part of what's going down is many of us are TIRED not only of the Clinton but of the fractious Bush-Clinton-Bush-Clinton political paradigm that's been foisted upon us since 1980. So, yes, this is BOTH pro-Obama AND anti-Clinton. |

RACE MATTERS. It always figures into the equation when black voters are given a choice between a black candidate and a white one. They vote either for a black man they think will benefit black people, or they reject a black man who they think will not benefit black people. They will never choose a white person over a black person as long as the black person can benefit blacks. This is just natural. Obama stands no chance of winning without the black vote that he can most certainly count on because he is the right kind of black person. Obama is the answer to black people's dream. Why? Because he is a black man who grew up to run for president. To vote for him is to reinforce a dream. A black dream. Why deny this????? I remain convinced that any black person who votes for Obama does so, because he's black. |
