Listen to the concert here: http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=17992251 Me'Shell NdegeOcello's name means "free like a bird," which effectively describes her mix of funk, soul, R&B, hip-hop, reggae, rock, and jazz — as well as lyrics that explore the politics of race, sex, gender, and more. Hear NdegeOcello perform a concert from WXPN and World Cafe Live in Philadelphia. The singer was born in Berlin and raised in Washington, D.C., where she attended the prestigious Duke Ellington School of the Arts while playing local clubs. But she eventually ended up in New York City, where she became one of the first artists to sign with Madonna's Maverick label in the early '90s. NdegeOcello's early releases have earned her multiple Grammy nominations, and her cover of Van Morrison's "Wild Night" (a 1994 duet with John Mellencamp) became a massive hit. The critically acclaimed Bitter, 1999's brooding song cycle about a troubled relationship, cast NdegeOcello as a mature and unconventional chronicler of human behavior, but since then, she's taken more creative risks. After the stridently messy Cookie and a few forays into spacey jazz, the recent The World Has Made Me the Man of My Dreams includes guest appearances by everyone from Pat Metheny to Oumou Sangare.

Yvettep, say it ain't so, you really do like Biggie? Next you'll be talling us that you have all of Tupac??. Oh, by the way, I luv me some Biggie and Tupac. I just can't see you poppin' your collar or telling someone not to step on your white sneaks *smile*. Okay here is a test: give me five of Biggie's "rules". AND: Tupac said something about "fair___________" |

LOL @ Carey. Yes, I am afraid so. Sometimes when I am walking around campus, surrounded by students half my age, looking all professional and listening to my iPod, what is piping through my ears is not sophisticated jazz or a scholarly lecture, but some old school hip-hop. A test? Well I do love tests, but I don't think I can pass this one. Are you talking about things like "don't get high on your own supply" and: Never let no one know How much dough you hold Because you know the cheddar breed jealousy Especially If that man ****** up Get your *** stuck up... ! Seriously, I'm one of those folks who first hears songs and I like the beat and the hook and only when I first hear it on my ear buds am I like "Oh, *that's* what he's saying??!!!" Not as familiar with Tupac's songs, so I flunk that one. But he's cool, too. "California Love" is still one of my favorite all time videos. (R.I.P. again.) BTW, a while back a professor at another university did an adaptation of Biggie's 10 Crack Commandments for new college faculty members. Some in the academic community were appalled, others thought it was brilliant (me among the latter). I also once wrote a "scholarly" version of a Ludacris rhyme on my website. Some of my colleagues thought it was wonderful but it did leave others shaking their heads. (Perhaps even stronger reactions behind my back???) LOL |

Vette....**BIG SMILE**....okay, you passed. You didn't get an "A" but I ain't going to call you a "Negro" or Kam *lol*. I had thought that you wasn't even going to hit back because .....well...I just thought you wouldn't. You seem like a free spirit. I mean, you don't seem to be affraid to be you. That brings to mind a quote I like to use. It goes: "People fear nothing more terrible than to take a stand that stands out sharply and clearly from the prevailing opinion. The tendency of most is to express a view that is so ambiqious that it "covers" everything and so popular that it "covers" everyone". Although I put that in qoutations I think a few of those words are mine *smile*, Anyway, I like people that are not affaid to be themselves......sooooo, I like you. Although I said you passed, I must admit that I thought you would get the Tupac piece before the Biggie. Yeah, I tried to trip you a little by calling the commandments "rules" but you came on with it.....BRAVO. I am like you, if the beat and the hook gets me I then might start to listen to the "meaning". I tell you who got me like that. And I doubt if anyone would think that I listen to her. Her name is .....oh no, I've drawn a blank.....Corinne Bailey Rae, that's it. I saw her on Leno or someplace and her sound just got me. No, I didn't listen to Meshells concert. Are you telling me I missed something!? |

LOL! OK, well glad I passed the test. Re: 2-Pac--I went to college on the East coast and lived there for 8 years after hs so I got into those rappers before the West Coast ones. Actually I liked NWA and Cube before I really got into 2-Pac. Really I only first became knowledgeable about him through his movies. I've heard good things about the artist you mention. Maybe I'll check her out. Re: Meshell--Yes, she is marvelous, especially if you like funky bass playing and music that is not the typical stuff you hear on the radio. Go to YouTube and enter her name in the search field--There are several excellent live clips of her playing. |

Oh, there's even a literary link w/Meshell: Her ex-partner is Rebecca Walker--daughter of Alice Walker and a writer herself. |
