I noticed this in a recent Walter Williams column

Times columnist and editorial board member Bill Maxwell kept a promise to himself, to become a professor at a small historically black college, to nurture needy students the way that mentors had encouraged him as a young man. His second year started with promise but ended in despair.

I know one of the reasons I was so moved by the film The Great Debaters was my yearning for the days when HBCU bred intelligent self reliant, honorable Black adults. Born out of necessity, HBCU’s, in their prime, provided educations that rivaled those given by any university. Now many HBCU reflect problems seen in poor, inner city, high schools.

Our mentality is changing.

Early one morning I noticed the entire contents of a Philly Blunt on my stoop. I wanted to pick up the tobacco mess but I did not want to get my hands dirty and I was in too much of a rush to get a broom to and sweep it up. I just sucked my teeth and walked off.

I guess I my frustration, with the mess, was obvious to a neighbor, who happened to be passing by. She asked if I was an owner or renter. I wondered to myself why that mattered, but I just said, “I thought these dudes out here knew me…”

My neighbor explained that it had nothing to do with me. The Brothers just left the tobacco wherever they happened to be at that instant. “You see”, she explained, “they don’t think like you do”. She then explained how the same cats leave all kinds of trash inside her apartment building hallways -- they live in the building…

I thanked her because I did take it personally and which made me angrier than I would have been were only just a mess to contend with.

But now I’m thinking because no one is angry about the lack of respect for property any more that we are actually contributing to the problem.

In much the same way many HBCU’s have abdicated their very relevance to students who refuse to learn.

Too few are still angry enough (or care enough) to continue fighting.

Okay, so HBCUs grew out of necessity because Whites didn't want integrated schools with Blacks and/or didn't want Blacks to be educated - period. But some free, educated, and forward-thinking Blacks (the so-called Talented Tenth) went ahead and built higher learning institutions for Blacks to receive a quality education comparable to that of Whites.

Fast forward to the 21st century. Black Americans don't want to learn - not even at HBCUs - and Black American ass Oprah is building schools in Africa, where the African instructors are molesting the African female students. Nice...
