By Corinne Innis December 24 2007 Whoopi Goldberg asked the Michelle Obama color question on “The View” on Thursday, December 13, 2007. According to Whoopi, she was awakened during the night by an odd thought, “It was a thought that had never occurred to me,” Whoopi reflected. “Barack Obama is one of the few men that we have seen who is a black man who has a very, very dark-skinned wife. She’s very dark-skinned for normally what you see. And I wondered to myself, would he be electable if he had a white wife?” There are moments when time slows, one’s pulse, one’s breathing. One winces. Then, suddenly, a shooting pain attacks one’s brain. Worse than any brain freeze from any strawberry slurpy. GOOD GOD. On one hand, I was glad that Whoopi put the issue of color on the table. Colorism is a virus that continues to plague the black community. On the other hand, when did Michelle Obama become chopped liver? Will her white replacement have a law degree from Harvard, or will her whiteness be sufficent currency? Will Obama find this replacement in time for the 2008 presidential nominations? Perhaps in a pinch he can marry Leah Kaufmann aka “Obama Girl.” How special. “The internet!” I thought. “Maybe the internet will make this right. Maybe there’s someone else out there who is as horrified as I am.” I searched the web and immediately found a video clip of the same segment on the view. Yep, lucky for John Edwards and Rudy Giuliani, Whoopi didn’t question whether their wives were too white or whether they would be electable if married to a black woman. Searching further, I found, “Michelle Obama Is Not A Lighter Shade Of ‘Trophy’ Wife” on Jezebel.com. According to the article, “From Clarence Thomas to Bill Cosby to Spike Lee to Chris Rock, the commonly-seen and accepted assumption in America is that behind every successful black man is a lighter-skinned (or white) woman.” What does a dark-skinned, fairly intelligent woman do with this information? After all, like Richard Pryor says on the subject of marrying white women, “Black men have a right to be happy too.” Yeah, black men do have a right to be happy. They suffered all by themselves through slavery, Jim Crow, high tech lynchings, and long bronco chases. Perhaps, dark-skinned black women should accommodate these beautiful brave men. Perhaps, every black man whether rich or poor should be entitled to a light-skinned or white women. Maybe, dark-skinned women from across the country can be fitted with full skintight “trophy wife” bodysuits that zip from their asses to the crown of her heads. Two little pin wholes can be left for their eyes, two larger ones for their nose, a small slit in the lips for eating, and a hole in the crotch area for going to the bathroom, having intercourse, or birthing babies (all babies, resulting, of course, from prescreened donor eggs, lest a negroid gene escape). Instead of going to Korean beauty supply stores to buy weaves, wigs, and bleaching creams, one will simply zip up a custom-made “trophy wife” bodysuit and have instantly light skin and long luxurious wavy or straight hair. Black was beautiful in the sixties, but now it is passé or half-passé. Black men can be dark-skinned, but their women can’t. Black men can have skin color from ginger to milk chocolate, to black licorce, but their women can’t. Black men can wear their hair natural like soft bristles of velvet, have full lips, button noses, or flat noses. However, in 2008, dark-skinned black women (and perhaps even light skinned women with very negroid faces) will wear a western, full-body, “trophy wife burqa.” I will wear one, and so will Whoopi, Oprah, Dr. Condoleezza Rice, Iman, Beverly Johnson, Naomi Campbell, Mae Jemison, Mary J. Blige, Alec Wek, Cicely Tyson, and Debra Roberts. Sojourner Truth, Harriet Tubman, Queen Mary (St. Croix), Barbara Jordon, and Shirley Chisholm will be exhumed and their bodies zipped into “trophy wife burqas” too. How special. Once properly zipped in burqas, our children will cease to be plagued with “yo mama so black” jokes. We will cease to hear “nappy headed whore” on the radio. Even rappers will abandon their occasional whore and slurs. One will be able to replace the saying “It’s my hair. I bought it.” (for weaves and wigs) with “It’s my skin. I bought it.” With a custom-made burqua, a dark-skinned black woman can marry the affluent dark-skinned black man of her dreams. O.K., Just joking. There will be no “trophy wife burqas” in 2008. But seriously, the sixties Civil Rights movement opened up huge opportunities, allowing unprecedented numbers of African Americans to prosper. However, gender and racial equality—as we see with the case of Michelle Obama’s gender and appearance triggering color-based political questions—are no longer priorities. We have, in effect, become victims of our own success. Many now pimp blackness while actually loathing it. Many have made an industry out of making things right, equal. How is it then possible that colorism has now become so accepted? Where is the political correctness when it comes to our diversity of color? How can we, the self-righteous, determine a woman’s value based on her shade? If Black men cannot revere Alec Wek as they do Beyonce and Hallie Berry, then the Civil Rights movement is now a farce. Whoopi Reflects, the actual discussion between Whoopi and her co-hosts, very interesting: http://jezebel.com/gossip/great-minds/michelle-obamas-darker-shade-of-skin-whoop i-weighs-in-333491.php Corinne Innis (infor@pennflemingpr.com) Executive Director Penn Fleming Public Relations PO. On a scale of 1 to 10, if Alicia Keys represents "one" and Alek Wek "ten", then Michelle Obama is not a "very dark-skinned" woman. Skin shade continues to be in the eye of the beholder. I've always considered Michelle medium brown. And I think as far as the presidential race is concerned the degree of color is overrated. White folks are not that focused on the delineations of blackness. I think they are comfortable with anybody who is noticeably not white. Only the colorist fanatics continue to belabor this point. |

White folks are not that focused on the delineations of blackness. I do not know if I agree. Certainly they give this less weight than we Blacks do. But I do think they pay it some mind. But actually, I think it is the very light, "ambiguously" Black as well as the very dark that are favored, and not so much women in the medium hues. Maybe the former are seen more acceptable and closer to White, but the latter often seem to be fetishized. Of course both types of attention are rarely "good" for the Black women involved or for any Black women for that matter, IMO. |

“trophy wife burqa”!!!! Now that one had me falling out of my seat...lol!!! Yes, I found that very clever as well. It reminded me of this advertising spot on the SciFi network. (I think it is an ad for the network itself.) It shows a person, who then proceeds to unzip themselves from the head down to reveal a whole other person inside. My kids are fascinated by the spot: they always exclaim, "Ooooo, CREEPY!" |

I made my remarks in the context of the presidential race, Yvette. So - are you saying that an "exotically black" first lady would be more appealing to whites voters? Or perhaps a porcelain mulatto? Or would "plain brown" neutralize the issue? |

"And I think as far as the presidential race is concerned the degree of color is overrated. White folks are not that focused on the delineations of blackness. I think they are comfortable with anybody who is noticeably not white." Thank you. I think the race card bluster is coming mostly from beleaguered Negroes and their deep rooted skin color paranoia. It amazes me how a number of Negroes make the most meaningless and pointless references to the mans skin color or whether he is "authentic" or not (what ever in the hell that means -I've yet to hear an intelligent explanation of the term). Like or it or not, this man is being taken as a serious contender for a major political party for POTUS. Much to revulsion of these Negroes, there is a serious number of white people who like this man and they are willing to vote and campaign aggressively for him. Something that was impossible for a black man to do in our parents and grandparents generation. Do I think the fact that he is a black man is significant to a number of white Americans? Of course. Could he win the White House being a black man? I'd like to think he could but to be honest, I personally don't think so. "Only the colorist fanatics continue to belabor this point." So true. The skin color schizophrenia of embittered Negroes drives them to make unwarranted caustic personal attacks and accusations against other blacks for something no one has any control over -their skin complexion. It makes no sense. But when you have deep rooted feelings of inferiority and jealousy, I guess the only way they can find some form of cathartic relief is via attacking other people they believe (real or imagined -more the latter) are the source of their bitterness.

Obama ain't electable now. If he had a white wife he'd be electable if he was a right wing Republican a la Clarence Thomas--who has a white wife |

A white wife would be a liability to Obama. Great droves of black and whites of both parties would find this unacceptable. |

Ah, I see, Cynique. I was thinking more generally--especially in the advertising arena. Chris, Justice Thomas was not elected, of course. I cannot off the top of my head think of any African American man who was married to a non African American woman at the time of an election to nationwide office, but of course there may be someone I am overlooking... |

Yvette is right, Clarence Thomas was not elected to his office and he'd never have been voted in since only a paltry few blacks and some conservative whites like him. |
