I attended the preview of this movie last week here in Harlem: it really is a fascinating flick. This lower 9th ward resident just happened to buy a video camera a few days before Katrina hit. The film includes a lot of her raw footage and chronicles her struggles over the course of a year post-Katrina.
In many ways I found this film more compeling hat Spike's When the Levees Broke (http://aalbc.com/reviews/when_the_levees_broke.htm).
The footage is raw and not great quality (like most amateur video). In fact, some people will have difficulty watching parts of the film because of the camera shake.
However this is the closest you will get to being an eye witness to this tradegy. |

I just visited the website, watched the trailer, and found out when it will be showing in my area. I'll definitely be in a theatre come September. Films like these are extremely important for preserving the truth behind historical events, rather than just what the powers that be want you to know. Can't you just see what the textbooks would've tried to say about Hurricane Katrina and its destruction twenty years from now? Like the textbooks' primarily inaccurate and minimalist discussion on slavery, the thrust would've been toward shifting the blame and minimizing the horror of Katrina in, maybe, three or four skinny paragraphs. Films like these help prevent that from happening, thank goodness. Unfortunately, there were no video cameras three hundred years ago.

Authorterralittle, I was in the lower 9th ward a year after Katrina -- it was an unmitigated disaster.
I can even image what those folks went through.
What makes me even more sick is how much the government has done (with my money) for the victims of 9-11, incomparison to the victims of Katrina. |

I, too, took a peek at the website. So, so, so powerful. I really hope HBO or Cinemax or somesuch picks up this film. That'd prolly be my only chance of seeing it.  |

I am inclined to avoid these documentaries because they highlight the futility of Katrina's unresolved problems, and I find this depressing and disgusting. |

I just saw it. Cynique although the documentary IS depressing, Kim Robert's resilient and positive spirit keeps you going throughout the film. This gal must have really been through some shyt growing up because to me she was kind of desensitized to the horrors and aftermath of Katrina. Hats off to Kim Roberts. The shaky parts of the film aren't long enough to distract from the movie...besides it can't get any RAW-ER than this. Danny Glover is one of the executive producers too. Roberts also founded Born Hustla Records. |

Lol ! Cynique...well I wasn't quite implying that you were running way from the truth. I'm saying that Kim Roberts outlook on life and her faith kept her strong and hopeful. |
