Hello All, I just came across this story today concerning the publishing rights of some of John Steinbeck's novels. http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20080813/people_nm/steinbeck_dc_4 Even today, authors don't seem to fully grasp that this is a business. If you don't do anything else, keep your rights (publishing and copyrights). And for pity sake, keep an eye out on your children. Make it so your children can benefit instead of all these spouse, third and fourth wives and all that crap. |

You know it seems that expending the creative energy to create these works that publishers place on the market means next to nothing. When you add in the effects of digital technology which can allow a book to technically stay in print forever, the authors seem to have very little leverage. I am surprised, and maybe I don't know if it does exist already, that a writer's cooperative publishing effort hasn't sprung up. I feel that the only reason that has not happened is that authors are very loose knit as a group. It still seems that these contracts should have a timeframe when rights revert back to the author or author's estate if deceased. www.DTPollard.com |
