Here is the latest information about the Harlem Book Fair: http://aalbc.com/news_july2008a.htm I'm moderating the following panel discussion: COUNTEE CULLEN LIBRARY AUDITORIUM 132 West 136th Street, corner of Malcolm X Boulevard SATURDAY, JULY 19 - 12:00 – 1:30p GAY AND LESBIAN FICTION: Resistance in the Marketplace? Moderator: Troy Johnson (Founder AALBC.com) Panelists: Terrance Dean (Hiding in Hip Hop: On the Down Low in the Entertainment Industry--From Music to Hollywood); Hickson (Ghettoheat); Linda Villarosa (Passing for Black) This panel was motivated by a post made by Zane regarding the resistance she experienced to her book Purple Panties (http://www.thumperscorner.com/discus/messages/1/36751.html). The idea intrigued me because while they industry may be pushing back; all indications I see is that readers want this material. In fact Terreance Dean's Hiding in Hip-Hop displaced Karrine Steffans' book from the #1 position after almost two years! Zane Purple Panties is #2 http://aalbc.com/books/mayjune_2008.htm (yeah I know I'm STILL working on this list!!). |

I wish I was rolling up there for a bit; I'll be in Manhattan but at my uncle's funeral and wake, unfortunately. LA Banks should have some The Darker Mask cards and promo stuff there, along with a galley or two Walter Mosley signed. Check out the interview for the upcoming Comic Con Gary and I did for it at www.comicon.com/pulse Attached of course is the book cover. Pls. say hi to Felicia Pride and my girl Deborah Gregory for me. Chris Chambers

Thanks Admin (Troy) for the update on the Harlem book fair. I will be attending this year and want to attend the workshop you will be monitoring as well as the one on James Baldwin who also wrote about gay fiction. I think the times overlap. I also would like to take this time to thank you for creating such a forum for us to share our love and passion for african american literature. I am new to the discussion board and everyone is so well read and current with the information on literature in our culture that I feel intimidated. I have learned so many names of new and classic authors that I am overwhelmed by my growing reading list. I hope to have more discussion with folks soon. Thank you for the opportunity and I hope to meet you at the Harlem Book Fair. Vanders |

hahaha--sorry. It was the wrong photo. I bet you get some pastor/church lady pushback re: your panel at the HBF. I have never been able to figure this out. They will ally themselves with the virulent rightwing white idiots over this issue, and defy you to even mildly point out the irony or inconsistency. Indeed, I'll bet you'll some straight female and male authors who may shy away--or attend to show how "progressive" or cool they may be. This stuff always seems to bring out either the most venal or most superficial in folks! Good luck. I'll try to get up there around noon if I can. |
